Arabic Studies
Growing in Israel
JERUSALEM (JNI) —
About 70 Israeli Arab
teachers are teaching
Arabic in Jewish schools. At
a study day for teachers of
Arabic at the Akiva Ulpan
near Natanya, it was re-
ported that about 500 stu-
dents in teachers'
seminaries and universities
are training to teach
Arabic, while about 200
Arabic teachers are taking
advanced courses in the
latest teaching techniques.
An Education Ministry offi-
cial said that ever since
Egyptian President Anwar
Sadat's visit to Jerusalem,
interest has grown in study-
ing Arabic.
In 1978, 103,000 pupils
studied Arabic; in 1979,
121,200; and in 1980,
132,750. There has been a
20 percent increase in the
number of high school
pupils taking matriculation
exams in the language.
Next year, Israel educa-
tion television will offer a
new course in Arabic.
Israelis Drive
Fewer Miles
JERUSALEM (JNI) —
The average Israeli family
automobile traveled 770
miles per month during the
past year, according to the
Central Bureau of Statis-
tics. This is a drop of nine
percent over car usage dur-
ing the previous year.
Commercial vehicle use
also dropped by three per-
cent to approximately 1,620
miles monthly.
Public transport remains
the favorite means of get-
ting to work, with 37 •er-
cent of the Israeli working
population taking the bus
each day. One out of four go
by car, 16 percent walk and
two percent prefer bicycles.
About six out of 10 persons
require at least a half-hour
to reach their jobs and 80
percent of the employment
force leaves for work before
