THE UNIQUE MAX FISHER: Elaborate prepara-
tions are now being made by the leadership of the United
Jewish Appeal to honor Max Fisher as a unique leader of
the American Jewish community who never stepped out of
Jewish leadership.
Unlike other Jewish personalities who serve a limited
umber of years as presidents of national Jewish organiza-
tions and then take a back seat in Jewish communal life,
Fisher went from strength to strength in top Jewish leader-
ship posts, actively devoting himself to major Jewish
causes. He gained the reputation — both in this country
and abroad,. including Israel — as the most outstanding
American Jewish leader.
BUILDER OF BRIDGES: Max Fisher is a builder of
bridges in Jewry.
When he was president of the Council ofJewish Feder-
ations he brought about closer cooperation between the
Jewish federations and the United Jewish Appeal, when
only a formal and cool relationship existed between these
two major arms of American Jewish philanthropy. He
cemented them into two sides of the same coin.
When he was later national chairman of the United
Jewish Appeal, he injected new vigor and brought about
greater unity between the Zionists and non-Zionists
partners in the UJA. Although not a Zionist, he was later
elected as chairman of the United Israel Appeal, the ste-
ward of the funds committed to Israel by the American
Jewish community.
He stimulated the reorganization of the Jewish
Agency — of which he is now chairman of the Board of
Governors — to make the agency a bridge between the
Jewish communities throughout the world and the people
of Israel, by having one-half of the members of its policy-
making organs come from the organized Jewish com-
munities of the free world and the other half from the World
Zionist Organization.
The Jewish day school movement in the United States
— which now plays an important role in the system of
Jewish education — has much to be thankful to Fisher. As
president of the Council of Jewish Federations, he broke
down the wall which was standing between the federations
and financing of Jewish day schools.
IN THE SERVICE OF JEWRY: As an influential
figure in the Republican Party, in which he plays an active
role, Fisher was slated at one time to be named by a Repub-
lican President of the U.S. as a member of his Cabinet.
Having the doors of the White House open to him under
Republican Administrations, he could have been appointed
U.S. Ambassador to a major 'country abroad. However,
while deeply interested in Republican political activities,
his dedication to service for the Jewish people was of fun-
damental importance to him.
He was instrumental in securing tens of,thousands of
U.S. entrance visas for Soviet Jews over and above the
immigration quota, under the Attorney General's parole
authority for admission of refugees to this country, not to
speak of his role behind the scenes in Republican Adminis-
trations in securing proper understanding for Israel.
