routine to see what works
best for you.
"This is not a passing fad;
good health habits are life-
long hopefully and worth
the time and effort you take
to do it right. I've been at it
for years and I still read ev-
erything I can get my hands
on. It's been very worth-
while for me; I feel better
than when I was 20 years
younger."
Question: "Do senior
citizens have special nut-
ritional needs?"
Answer: "I think if you're
over 65, you need extra
minerals such as calcium,
magnesium and iron as well
as your B Complex and the
ever important C. Vitamin
E is helpful for alleviating
poor circulation which is
often responsible for those
annoying and painful leg
cramps and foods high in
fiber are extremely impor-
tant.
"Sugar and sweets are
something to really stay
away from no matter what
age — as we grow older
there is a higher incidence
of sugar diabetes. I don't
know if vitamins and nutri-
tion will make us live
longer, but I really believe
they can make a whole lot of
difference in way we feel
while we are living and the
quality is more important to
me than the quantity.
"A perfect example is Dr.
Richard Sterba and his wife
Dr. Edith Sterba, both
world-famous analysts and
in their 80s. They live in
Grosse Pointe, still travel
the world lecturing, write
books, horseback ride —
and the best part is — their
minds are razor sharp. No
senility here. Both doctors
take lots of vitamins and
watch what they eat. I say it
makes a difference. It's cer-
-
tainly worth a try."
Question: "I'm a heavy
smoker. Will vitamins
help?"
Answer: "Each cigarette
destroys about 25 mg. of
Vitamin C and you are more
prone to lung cancer, risk
cardiovascular and pulmo-
nary disorders than non-

smokers. I think you need
all the nutritional help you
,can get, especially from
anti-oxidants such as Vita-
min A, C, E and selenium.
I'm sure you don't need a
long boring lecture on the
harmful effects of cigarette
smoking. If you're in-
terested enough to find out
if vitamins can be helpful,
go all the way and give it up.
I know it can be done —I did
it! I used to smoke four
packages a day (Camels, no
less). I went from that to
nothing and it was really
hard. I hung in there and
am I glad I did."
Question: "Do vitamins
help me during
menopause?"
Answer: "While I was
going to seminars on vita-
min therapy throughout the
country, this question kept
coming up. The answer is
that many women going
through the discomforts of
menopause have found that
400 units of Vitamin E
three times per day helps
alleviate hot flashes. Here
again the magic of Vitamin
C is helpful and so is the B
Complex. Now is the time to
take really good care of
yourself. Stay away from
sugar, white flour, caffeine,
salt, liquor and stressful
situations whenever possi-
ble. Don't let anyone tell
you you're imagining how
badly you feel. I've talked to
too many women and they
can't all be wrong.
"I spoke at a lecture on
menopause and middle-age
at Wayne County Medical
Society and it was astound-
ing how many women go
through hell at this time in
their lives. My advice is to
keep your chin up, do all the
right things and keep good
thoughts. We all go through
it, hopefully my advice will
make it a little easier for
you. Let's hope so."
Question: "What vita-
mins help acne?"
Answer: "This problem
which can be such a scrooge
in your teen years has been
treated many ways. A
natural way which I
encourage has been really
helpful and may be bene-
ficial to you. I suggest one
multivitamin without min-
erals, one dry Vitamin E,
400 units twice a day; one
Vitamin A, 25,000 units;
one zinc, 50 mg. three times
a day. Your diet plays an
important part here. Stay
away from sweets, ciga-
rettes and alcohol. Exercise
is a real plus. Jogging is
great and I love jumping
rope to music. It's fun and
it's super for you."
Question: "Is there a
vitamin that can help in-
somnia?"
Answer: "According to re-
search at the Maryland
Psychiatric Research Cen-
ter, L tryptophan, a natural
amino acid that is essential
to our bodies, helps induce
sleep. It is also considered a
natural tranquilizer and I
have many customers who
use it and say for the first
time they can sleep like a
baby without the use of
sedatives."
