Council Opposes School Prayer

The Jewish Community
Council of Metropolitan De-
troit has begun organizing
opposition to public school
prayer legislation that has
been re-introduced in the
Michigan House of Repre-
sentatives.
House Bill 4017, intro-
duced by State Representa-
tive Ethel Terrell, would
mandate school districts to
set aside time during the
school day for prayer. Cur-
rent law allows districts to
accommodate students

wishing to participate in
voluntary prayer or silent
meditation. The proposed
bill would force districts to
set aside time devoted to
spoken prayer.
