One of our most misunderstood prayers is the Kad-
dish. Often lookgd upon as a requiem or a lamenta-
tion to be said aTter the death of a close relative, the
Kaddish is actually an affirmation of the hopes of the
Jewish people and all mankind.
One of the recurring themes in our Torah and of our
Prophets is the ultimate return of the Jews from the
diaspora and our rededication to lead a more spiritu-
ally pure form of life (Deuteronomy 30:10). At this
period, all of mankind will acknowledge the validity
of the Torah (Isaiah 2:2-4). Our Prophets foretell,
however, of great cataclysmic events precedirig this
era (Ezekiel 38, Zechariah 14). At the end of these
upheavals, G-d will reign as the sole ruler of the
universe (Zechariah 14:9), and will be universally
recognized as both the source of existence and the
ultimate force in the course of human events (Ezekiel
38:25 — see Malbim's commentary).
Our prayers, espedially those of the High Holidays,
are full of references to the coming of this era. In fact,
the Talmud (Shabbos 31) states that one of the ques-
tions that is asked when a Jew stands in judgement
after death is whether he has looked forward to this
new world order predicted by the Prophets (Rashi's
commentary).
We are not allowed to make peace with the current
state of imperfection: The growing rate of assimila-
tion and intermarriage; the pervasive ignorance of
our heritage by the great majority of the Jewish
community; the almost complete secularization of
our outlook and values. It is with this in mind that we
participate in the prayer of Kaddish.
