The Egyptian president's
speech clearly indicates
that Egypt favors a Euro-
pean initiative on condition
that it does not run contrary
to the Camp David agree-
ments and is synchronized
with Cairo and the United
States:
Egyptian Minister of
State for Foreign Affairs
Butros Ghali said Tues-
day that the European in-
itiative should be part of
the overall American pol-
icy.
-- Ghali implied that in
Egypt's view America still
holds, and will continue to
hold for a long time, the
trump cards in the Middle
East peace process.
Meanwhile, Israel's chief
autonomy negotiator, Dr.
Yosef Burg, has sharply at-
tacked Egypt for dragging
its feet over the autonomy
talks. In an official state-
ment Burg observed that "a
party who does not fulfil his
commitment to negotiate
brings down upon himself
the suspicion that he will
not be scrupulous in fulfil-
ling other commitments

him.
The newly appointed ar-
chbishop said that he did
not consider his conversion
as a "renunciation but as an
affirmation of my Jewish
identity which I assumed
within Christianity."
Lustiger, whose mother
died at Auschwitz in 1943,
said his parents were op-
posed to his conversion "but
finally gave in." He was
baptized in 1940 when he
was 14.

He told French radio
stations that he wore the
yellow Star of David
throughout the Nazi oc-
cupation of France until
he went into hiding.
He is expected to be ele-
vated to the rank of cardinal
at the next Consistory by
Pope John Paul II. There
have been several cardinals
of Jewish origin in the his-
tory of the Catholic Church,
but only one other, in 1106,
who converted from
Judaism and later became a
cardinal.

which he has undertaken."
Burg said the two coun-
tries had committed them-
selves to negotiate "con-
tinuously and in good faith"
to reach the autonomy
agreement "at the earliest
possible date" (in the word-
ing of the joint Sadat-Begin
letter to Carter of March
1979).
Burg's statement came
in the wake of the leaked
report of a recent conver-
sation between President
Sadat and Israeli Ambas-
sador Eliahu Ben-Elissar
in which the Egyptian
leader expressed some
reluctance or scepticism
regarding the resump-
tion of the long-dormant
autonomy talks.
Regarding the leak itself
— in which whole chunks of
the ambassador's top-secret
cable to Jerusalem were
broadcast over Kol Yisrael
— Dr. Burg said it had dam-
aged "state security" and
demanded that the person
responsible be punished.
In his statement on the
autonomy talks, issued by
the government press office,
Dr. Burg reiterated Israel's
readiness to resume the
negotiations at any time. Is-
rael, he noted, had not been
responsible for the various
cutoffs and delays. "If there
is no negotiation, there is
certainly no chance of
reaching agreement," he
noted.
If the U.S. or Egypt were
delaying a resumption
pending the Israeli elec-
tions, Burg continued, this
would be an outright con-
travention of Camp David
and of the parties' commit-
ment to negotiate in good

Genetic Disorders
Among Jews
Topic of Book

TEL AVIV — Over 100
genetic disorders are known
to afflict the Jewish people,
according to a new book
entitled "Genetic Disorders
Among the Jewish People,"
by Dr. Richard M. Good-
man, professor of human
genetics at Tel Aviv Uni-
versity's Sackler School of
Medicine and the Chaim
Sheba Medical Center, pub-
lished by the Johns Hopkins
University Press. Most of
these diseases are severe
and affect the longevity of
those afflicted, says Prof.
Goodman.
This book, the first
authoritative and com-
prehensive reference work
on the clinical genetics of
the Jewish people, offers a
broad overview of the his-
torical development and
consequent peterogenetty
of the Jewish people; of
the genetic diseases known
to afflict various Jewish
ethnic groups (Ashkenazi,
Sepharadi, and Oriental);
and of diagnosis, prevention
and therapeutic approaches
to the disorders.

faith. "It is impossible to
demand of Israel that it
carry out its commitments
under Camp David in full
while other parties carry
out theirs only selectively,"
Burg concluded.
This last, tough-sounding
remark seemed to be a hint
that Israel might review its
commitment to complete
the Sinai withdrawal by
April 1982 if there were not
adequate progress in the
autonomy talks.
