we waited in the desert encircled
for the vessel of years to be filled
in circles of tents & hasty enclosures

a brace of birds
hung in a circle by their feet
an old woman plucking feathers
by the tuft
humming a tune & swaying in a circle

we have been such birds
hung by one leg upside down
& we have sprinkled the blood
of birds on the altar

a pomegranate swelling
seeds translucent with juice
each seed is a gear
turning in the desert

we hang red fruits from the rafter
crush red seeds in our mouths
running sweet & wet

we have been such seeds
crushed in the beaks of angry birds

we shake the palm branch
& it rustled loud in each of the four corners

we have lived in corners
& feared the rustling of every branch

now we face the wind & we shout
& we shake our branch in all directions
& the wind is cedar boughs & citron
& the harvest is clear & sweet on our tongues
& even the birds are made joyful
by our shouts

Mengele Teaching Uruguay
How to- Torture Its Prisoners

TEL AVIV (JTA) —
Joseph Mengele, who was
the chief physician in Au-
schwitz where he conducted
experiments on camp in-
mates, is now working for
the government of Uruguay
as an adviser on how to tor-
ture inmates, especially
Jewish inmates, in the
notorious "Freedom
Prison," the main detention
center for political pris-
oners.
This was reported last
weekend in the Maariv by
columnist Jacobo Timer-
man who based his story on
Agence France Presse
(AFP) reports from Brazil.
One wire dispatch from Rio
de Janeiro quoted a "reli-
able source," who asked to
remain anonymous about
the work Mengele was do-
ing.
Four days earlier. a man
who identified himself as
Daniel Rey Pisma and de-
scribed himself as a deserter _
from Uruguay's navy, told
an AFP correspondent in
Sao Paulo that the govern-
ment of Uruguay was carry-
ing out horrible tortures on
political prisoners.
Timerman, the former
editor of La Prensa in
Buenos Aires, who was
himself a political prisoner
in Argentina, noted that
given the close timing of the
two AFP reports, it is rea-
sonable to assume that the
reliable source in the Rio
dispatch was actually
Pisma.
Timerman wrote that
"Pisma has good reason
to be acquainted with the
Freedom Prison. For
three years, from 1976 to
1979, he worked for the
construction service of
the Uruguayan army. He

Porto Alegre has 15,000

Brazil.
Other Brazilian cities
have Jewish street names
also. Rio de Janeiro has a
Ben Gurion Square, a Herzl
Street and a Zamenhof
Street. Sao Paulo has a
State of Israel Square and a
