Circumcision
in the Arctic
TORONTO (JTA) — His-
tory was made recently in
the Arctic city of Yel-
lowknife, in Canada's
Northwest Territories. The
event was the circumcision
of Nathaniel Moll, son of
David and Marianne Moll,
in the home of Harold and
Zelda Glick. Rabbi D. Post-
one of Calgary, Alberta, of-
ficiated.
Another first on that oc-
casion was the presence of a
minyan, the first time that
at least 10 Jews were pre-
sent at the same place in
Yellowknife. The city has a
)opulation of 10,000 but
-- there is only one Jewish
family,_the Glicks. A hand-
ful of Israelis and Canadian
Jews frequent the city, hold-
ing various jobs or assign-
ments with different levels
of government.
Present at the event were
individuals and couples
from Cambridge Bay, Ran-
kin Inlet and Edmonton,
and a grandmother all the
way from St. Catherines,
Ontario in the Niagara
Peninsula. The Glicks pre-
pared a buffet supper of Arc-
tic char for the guests.

Canadian Doctors
Report Decrease
in Circumcisions
CHICAGO — More
Canadian doctors are listen-
ing to medical authorities
who maintain that routine
circumciscons are unwar-
ranted and may pose
hazards to newborn boys,
according to a report in
Pediatrics, a publication of
the American Academy of
Pediatrics.
The circumcision rate in
Canada now averages 50
percent and is much lower
in some provinces. The cir-
cumcision rate in the
United States is estimated
to be 80 percent. The Corn-
mission on Professional and
Hospital Actitivies in Ann
Arbor estimated that last
year in the U.S. some
1,494,000 circumcisions
were performed, a number
that has remained fully
steady during the last sev-
eral years.
Bias Could
Force Migration
PARIS (ZINS) — In an
interview in the French
daily LeMonde, Baron Guy
de Rothschild said that if
Jews' patriotism towards
France remains in question
there is a possibility he
— - vould emigrate to Israel.
He said he is "a French
citizen and not an immig-
rant."
He cited a recent survey
which showed that 49 per-
certt6a4ke French public be-
lieves there are too many
North Africans in France,
28 percent believe there are
too many blacks, 16 percent
believe there are too many
Spaniards, 12 percent say
there are too many Jews, six
percent say there are too
many Corsicans and four
percent say there are too
many Protestants.
