Hardship Fund to Benefit
Nazi Persecution Victims

NEW YORK — The Con-
ference on Jewish Material
Claims Against Germany
announced that Jewish vic-
tims of Nazi persecution
who were in no position to
file claims under German
indemnification laws may
apply for a grant from a
hardship fund established
with German federal gov-
ernment appropriations.
According to the
guidelines issued by the
German government,
grants will be made to such
Jewish persecutees who suf-
fered damage to their
health and are in strained
financial circumstances.
The guidelines limit indi-
vidual payments to DM
5,000 ($2,500) per person.
It is the intention of the
German government,
within its budgetary limita-
tions, to make available up
to DM 400 million for this
purpose in the coming
years. The Conference on

The hardship fund is
intended primarily to
handle applications from
such Jewish victims of
Nazi persecution who left
Eastern Europe after
1965 when the deadline
for filing claims under
the German indemnifica-
tion laws expired. Other
persecutees who failed
for valid reasons to file
timely indemnification
claims in past years may
also apply to the hard-
ship fund.

color of which reflect con-
temporary construction in
Jerusalem, houses all the
Israeli offices that, for the
past several years, have
been scattered in three
buildings.
The embassy itself, the
residence of Israel's ambas-
sador, also is considerably
closer to the chancery.
Israel's chancery, lo-
cated at Van Ness Street
and Reno Road, is the
first in the "international
center" established by
the State Department for
a dozen chanceries.
In keeping with modern
security requirements, the
building is protected by
brick and metal fencing and
an entrance that permits
easy access only with the
approval of a secluded
guard. The cost of the build-
ing and its furnishings to-
talled $5 million.
Works of some 50 Israeli
artists decorate the interior
and exterior, making the
structure a showcase of Is-
raeli art. Works include
those of Ruben Rubin,
Menasha Kadishman,
Yigal Tomaikas, and Yis-
rael Shemi.

Request for Sinai
Airfields Denied

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Israeli and American
embassies in Cairo denied
that any official request had
been made by the U.S. to
Egypt for use of the two
military airfields in Sinai
that Israel will evacuate
when it completes its depar-
ture from the peninsula in
1982.
The denials were issued
after Egypt's Deputy Pre-
mier, Fouad Moheiddin, de-
clared in Parliament that
Israel and the U.S. had "in-
sisted" on the use of the air-
fields by U.S. forces.
He said this was categori-
cally rejected by the Egyp-
tian government.

for the consciousness of well
doing is, in itself, ample re-
ward.
