NEW YORK (JTA) —
United Nations Secretary
General Kurt Waldheim
last week rejected a request
by three rabbis and two
nuns to permit them to
stage a hunger strike at the
UN on behalf of the Ameri-
can hostages in Iran and
four Catholic women mur-
dered in El Salvador.
The request had been
made in a telegram to the
Secretary General in light
of the fact that he granted
permission to Mayors Fand
Kawasme of Hebron and
Mohammed Milhim of
Halhoul to hold a hunger
strike on UN premises to
protest their expulsion by
Israeli authorities.
One of the rabbis involved
said his group rejects Wal-
dheim's argument that the
mayors' protest was allowed
because their case was the
subject of three Security
Council resolutions. The
group vowed to continue
their efforts.

The rabbis, Avraham

and Reuven Grodner of

and the nuns, Sister Rose
Thering, professor of educa-•

sity in New Nersey, and
Ann Patrick Ware, vice
president of the National
Coalition of American
Nuns, made their request in
a telegram sent to Wal-
dheim.
Ambassador
Israeli
Yehuda Blum telephoned
Waldheim last week and
called the mayors' hunger
strike "an unfriendly act
toward Israel.” Blum said
Waldheim broke a well-
established practice by
allowing a demonstration
inside the UN.
Meanwhile, the mayors
ended their hunger strike
after six days follwing an
appeal to them by Wal-

Wallenberg
Sabbath Set

MIAMI — The American
Anti-Nazi Association has
issued a call to all churches
and synagogues to devote
part of their services Jan.
17-18 as a tribute to Rauol
Wallenberg, the Swedish
Christian who risked his
life to save thousands of
Jews in Budapest during
the last months of World
War II.
Rabbi Rubin R. Dobin ex-
plained that the weekend
coincides with the 36th an-
niversary of Wallenberg's
disappearance in Budapest.
He was kidnapped and im-
prisoned by Soviet troops in
1945.
After inquiries were
made about his where-
abouts, the Russians first
denied any knowledge
about Wallenberg. They
later changed their story
and admitted holding
him but claimed that he
died in prison in 1947.
However, there have
been many reports from
eyewitnesses who claim
to have seen Wallenberg
many years after that
date.
On Jan. 15, formal hear-
ings will convene in Stoc-
kholm, Sweden to hear tes-
timony about the fate of
Wallenberg.

Oil in Israel?
Prof. Says Yes

TEL AVIV (JTA) — An
AMerican geologist who
claims to have been right 22
times out of 22 when advis-
ing prospectors where to
drill for oil has picked two
sites in Israel where he is
confident oil will be found.
Dr. Rex Peterson, 48,
president of the Satellite Oil
Research and Development
Corp. and lecturer at the
University of Nebraska,
spent 12 years developing
his method of interpreting
satellite pictures of the
earth's structure, mainly
structural faults.

dheim and U.S. Ambas-
sador Donald McHenry,
December's president of
the Security Council.
Waldheim told the
mayors he would con-
tinue efforts to have the
Security Council resolu-
tions implemented. The
mayors said they would
continue the hunger
strike elsewhere.
The U.S. State Depart-
ment announced that the
mayors' case had been dis-
cussed with Israeli prim,e
Minister Menahem Begin.
