NEW YORK, N.Y. — A
contingent of American
citizens, all survivors of the
Holocaust, is expected in Is-
rael in June 1981 for the
World Gathering of Jewish
Holocaust Survivors.
The gathering will be
held under the patronage of
Prime Minister Menahem
Begin and the gathering's
joint chairmen, both sur-
vivors, American author
Elie Wiesel and President of

the European Parliament,
Simone Veil.
The aims of the organiz-
ers of the gathering are to
emphasize the significance
and legacy of the Holocaust
and to serve notice that the
Holocaust must be neither
forgotten nor repeated; to
confirm the continuity and
survival of the Jewish
people as a whole, with the
state of Israel as its focal
point; and to create an

opportunity for survivors
from around the world —
once in a lifetime — to be
with each other, their
spouses, their children and
grandchildren, to meet and
share their common experi-
ences of the past and their
aspirations for the future.
During the gathering's
four days, from June 15
to 18, there will be an in-
augural mass meeting
and memorial service at
Jerusalem's Yad Vas-
hem; a march of sur-
vivors through the
streets of Jerusalem to
the Western Wall; special
events at the three kibut-
zim in Israel established
by Holocaust survivors;
participants are invited
to place a memento of
their Holocaust experi-
ences in the Yad Vashem
archives and special
seminars and programs
will be arranged for the
survivors and their
families.

gathering, contact Gloria
Pianko at Travel Un-

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Gen. Mordechai Gur,
former chief of staff of Is-
rael's armed forces, said
that Israel should avoid by
all means of confrontation
with Syrian armed forces in
Lebanon.
Gur, who appeared on a
television interview, was
referring to the deaths of
three Syrian soldiers and
the wounding of two others
during a recent Israeli at-
tack on terrorist positions in
south Lebanon.
Gur said it was possible to
engage in anti-terrorist op-
erations in Lebanon with-
out complicating the situa-
tion with Syria.
Israel expressed regret
yesterday over the Sy-
rian casualties and
stressed that the Syrian
soldiers had been outside
the area where the Syrian
army — the Arab
peacekeeping force in
Lebanon — normally op-
erates when they were
hit. Deputy Defense
Minister Mordechair
Zipori said "Israel wants
to avoid a conflict with its
neighbors. Our
encounter is with the ter-
rorists only."
Meanwhile, an Israeli
soldier was also killed
Nachman Zion, 20, a cor-
poral, was fatally wounded
when his unit stormed a ter-
rorist outpost.

Death Sentence

NEW YORK — A crimi-
nal court in Turkey has sen-
tenced four Palestinian ter-
rorists to death for killing
two Turkish security offi-
cers when they seized the
Egyptian embassy in Ank-
ara in July 1979.
A Turk who aided the ter-
rorists was given a 21-year
jail sentence.
