Sylvia Ross, special gifts chairman of the Bnai Brith
Women's Council, at the women's annual special gifts
luncheon. Mrs. Charlupski and her husband, Allen,
were honored for their contribution for the refurbish-
ing of a classroom in the Bnai Brith Women's Chil-
dren's Home in Israel. The luncheon also was the oc-
casion for the presentation of an album of the high-
lights of last year's luncheon to Miriam Shenkman,

1980 issue of the American
Jewish Committee's publi-
cation, Present Tense.
A former underground
Hebrew teacher and now a
physicist at the Weizmann
Institute - in Israel,
Ulanovsky recalls that not
until the founding of the
state of Israel was Hebrew
officially viewed as a
foreign language. Before
that, according to quotes he
offers from Soviet prop-
agandists, Hebrew was an
instrument of counter-
revolutionary subversive
activities by Jewish reli-
gious clericals and
Zionists."
With publication of a
Hebrew-Russian dictionary
in 1963, he goes on, unoffi-
cial legal status was given
to teaching Hebrew, a legal-
ity that has since been re-
versed by Soviet
authorities.
Ulanovsky recalls that
he could never register as
a private Hebrew teacher
with local tax officials. In
fact, he cites the case of
Iosif Begun, a Soviet
Jewish refusenik, who in
1976 was sentenced to
prison for being without
a job though he had tried
to register as a Hebrew
teacher.
While Yiddish has been
recognized as the official
language of Soviet Jews, no
Jewish schools or courses in
Yiddish exist in the entire
Soviet Union, Ulanovsky
points out, adding that since
no one can receive a diploma
as a Yiddish teacher, the
teaching of Yiddish in the
USSR is illegal.

Year of Dove'
Looks Behind
Peace Treaty

.

The complex and fas-
cinating story behind the
signing of the Egyptian-
Israeli peace treaty is de-
tailed in "The Year of the
Dove," a Bantam paperback
written by Eitan Haber,
Zeev Schiff and Ehud Yarri.
The volume reveals facts
and events including pro-
tocols of behind the scene
negotiations and gives full
accounts of little-reported
meetings. The reader will
also learn how Sada
Knesset speech was checks
by an Israeli lie detector and
the story behind the secret
PLO-Israeli talks.
The authors have all
worked behind the scenes in
Middle East politics. Haber
is a military correspondent
and biographer of Menahem
Begin; Schiff is a military
analyst and Israeli army
historian; and Yarri is head
of the Arab Affairs Depart-
ment of Israeli Television.

Do not consider it a proof
just because it is written in
books, for a liar who will de-
ceive with his tongue will
not hesitate tci do so with his
pen.
