Sinai Gets Rare
g Freud Volume

D r. Harry E. August, the
"father of psychiatry" at
Sinai Hospital, presented a
rare first edition of Freud's
"The Interpretation of
Dreams" to the psychiatry
department. The presenta-
tion was made at a reception
in Dr. August's honor Mon-
day at the Michigan Inn.
The volume will be placed in
the Samuel Frank Medical
Library.
Dr. August, who was one
of the key founders of Sinai
Hospital's department of
psychiatry, was one of the
first psychiatrists on staff
and remains on the staff as a
consultant. ,

In addition, a gift of
$100,000 was made to the
Guild's Arch of Friends
endowment fund from the
estate of Lillian B. Simons,
sister of Mrs. Nate Shapero,
to honor Jean. Proceeds
from the fund this year have
been earmarked to enrich
Sinai's cardiovascular care
program.
Roth's address was the
second Esther B. Mellen
Memorial Lecture, an an-
nual lecture series made
possible by a donation to
Sinai's Medical Endowment
Fund from Dr. Hyman Mel-
len in memory of his - wife.
Dr. Mellen is a former chief
of staff of the hospital.
Six persons were re-
elected to three-year
terms on the hospital's
board of trustees. They
are: Mandell L. Berman,
Deutsch, Samuel Fran-
kel, Joseph H. Jackier,
Mark E. Schlussel and
Harold Weisberg.
Deutsch also announced
the appointment of three
additional board members:
Beth Lowenstein, J.
Richard Cooper and Albert
J. Dunmore. These were ap-
pointed at a pre'vious board
meeting.

The custom of eating
spices such as onions and
garlic on the Sabbath has
several origins.
First, it is claimed that
the Sabbath should be
treated as a "delight" and
therefore foods which give
delight should be consumed.
Hence spicy foods which
provide a variety of tastes
should be enjoyed in the
spirit of this delight.
Second, it is claimed that
there is a connection be-
tween this practice and the
manna that came down
from heaven for the Jews in
the wilderness during their
travels- towards the prom-
ised land. This manna was
supposed to have had every •
imaginable taste. The
spices aforementioned are
thus added on the Sabbath
to remind us of the provi-
dence of the Almighty who
supplied us with every im-
aginable taste during our 40

28000 Telegraph, Tel Twelve Mall

sources claim that the taste
of garlic and onion was mis-
sing from the manna so as
not to injure the pregnant
women for whom this might
be harmful. Therefore, the
garlic and onion tastes had
to be added if the Israelites
wanted to enjoy them. We
thus add these as a remem-
brance of our practice in the
wilderness.

Inflation Hedge

JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
Economist Eliezer Levin,
writing in the newspaper
Haaretz, says Israelis have
managed to stay even or
better Israel's record high
inflation rate by investing
in government securities or
bank money market funds.
IL100,000 ($6,200) in-
vested last January would
have yielded IL 155,000
from government securities
in June, equal to the infla-
tion rate. Various bank
funds did even better. The
leader was the margalit
Fund of Bank Leumi which
turned the IL100,000 into
IL 259,000 in six months.
