The Best of Everything

HAD
HAVING
DINNER twice at Mario's
on Second, now that Frank
Passalacqua is the new
owner . . . and with excel-
lent results . . . our next
venture was for lunch . . .
Could it be as good as
dinner? . . . The answer is
yes . . . very much so . . .
Our waiter, Achille Bian-
, chi, one of the best ones
,ere . . courteous, effi-
_Cent and very accommodat-
ing . . . mixed the tossed
salad at tableside with crisp
lettuce, chopped egg, ceci
beans, tomatoes and pure
olive oil.
The steak we had could be
cut with the back of a knife
. . . and linguini with but-
ter sauce was too good to be
true.
Mario's of today can be
told in the exact words
heard by Sid Frumkin and
myself . . . said by a gent at
the next table . . . "The
place is so much better than
before."
Upon learning that
Mario's- kitchen is open Fri-
day and Saturday til 1:30
a.m. . . . the next will be
trek number four there in a
review to fill the entire
gamut of Frank
Passalacqua's new opera-
tion.
on
EXCALIBUR
Northwestern and Franklin
will not be open Thanksgiv-
ing Day as planned . . .
Circumstances out of owner
Pat Archer's control inter-
vened . . . and his plans for
the day went haywire.
HEALTHY JONES will
take over P.J. Clarke's in
Birmingham . . . while
still retaining its present
spot on Northwestern . . .
and call it Baby Jones . . .
around the end of this
month.
Reason for the name is
P.J.'s small kitchen .. .
and the condensed menu
will consist of the best of
Healthy Jones . . . Dr.
Sonya Friedman will be a
partner with Joan and Dr.
Don Wittenberg.
WHO SAID eating isn't
fun, also? . . . There's a
telephone at every table and
people can call numbers
above to talk with others at
Eater's Digest (former Egg
and I) on Woodward near 12
Mile . . . Not only this, but
game sheets are given to all
customers, who get the an-
vers by dialing a certain

There are numbers for in-
dividual horoscope . . .
wisdom tidbits . . . sports
and lottery results . . .
children's riddles and
stories . . . personal lucky
number for the day . . . 10
top songs and records . . .
and even dial-a-joke.
Eate'r's Digest also has a
Keen-O-Phone setup . . .
where you get a sheet . . .
and dial certain numbers
for your winners (discounts
on the check) . . . The voice
at the other end gives you 10
numbers and you win ac-
cording to the amount your
card has . . It's almost like
being in Las Vegas . . . and
) gambling is involved
ince you don't pick out your

own numbers to play.
Eater's Digest is a fun
place . . . and much more
. . . like soup and salad
bar, all you can eat, for
99c with entrees or sand-
wich . . . Soup and salad
alone is $1.25.
Even lobster meat stuffed
into two jumbo lobster-
shaped shells, topped with a
butter crust and flame-
broiled . . . for $2.99 with
potato, tole slaw, lemon
butter and biscuits.
SUNDAY CONCERT
series is free every Sunday 2
to 4 at Somerset Mall . . .
This Sunday is the Martin
Scot Kosins pop trio . . .
and Nov. 30 comes Gene
Miller's Ink Spots (yes, still
another group by that
name!).
NEW LOOK AT Pickle
Barrel Delicatessen in
Evergreen Plaza, 12 Mile
and Evergreen, is the faces
of now -partners . . . Al
Winkler and Jack Baiter
. . . the latter taking over
for the former half-owner,
Sy Ginsburg.
Al is one of the hardest-
working countermen in the
deli game . . . and Jack is a
restaurateur who never
stops thinking of ways to
better an operation.
Because of this new com-
bination, things at the
Pickle Barrel should look
even brighter.
Ever hear of a Deli
Burger? . . . It's on the
Pickle Barrel menu . . .
hamburger, fried salami
and melted cheese.
There'll soon be a daily
delivery . . . from the
Pickle Barrel to offices in
the area . . . It'll be called
Dial-A-Deli.
And here's big news for
theater goers or folks out
late . . . New hours as of
tonight are Friday 11 a.m.
to 12 midnight, Saturday,
10 a.m. to 12 midnight and
Sunday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Pickle Barrel has faces
you'll want to see again-too
. . . like Chris Lancaster,
the wonderful gal who used
to wait on folks in the
Skylight Room at Darbys on
Wyoming and Seven Mile
. . . She's head lassie and a
really good one . . . Talk
about efficiency and know-
how . . . Chris has very few
equals.
Also Dave Dubbs working
mornings three hours a day,
three days a week, Tuesday,
Thursday and Friday.
There's big things in store
for Pickle Barrel Deli now
that Al and Jack are to-
gether.
THE NEW DINNER
Theater at Stouffer's North-
land Inn, Gonzo Theater, in
collaboration with the
Southfield Repertory Thea-
ter, that opened last Friday
night, is in the remodeled
former Grogshop . . . seat-
ing about 100.
WICKER WORKS at
Northfield Hilton will have
a full Thanksgiving feast
day . . . From 7 to 9 a.m. is
its standard breakfast
menu . . 9 to noon is an
elaborate brunch . . . and
starting at 1 p.m., Wicker

Strasberg to Be in `Skokie' Film

Lee Strasberg, artistic di-
rector of the Actors Studio,
celebrated his 79th birth-
day Monday by playing a
cameo role in a made-for-
television movie, "Skokie,"
the New York Times re-
ported.

DSO Musicians
Form New Trio

Detroit Symphony Or-
chestra musicians Misha
Rachlevsky, violin; Paul
Silver, viola; and David
Saltzman, cello; have
formed the President's Trio
of Oakland University.
The trio will perform on
Dec. 6, Jan. 23, and March
22, and each concert will
feature • at least one artist
who is a member of the OU
music faculty.
Information about the
President's Trio of Oakland
University and concert date
information can be obtained
by calling the OU School of
Performing Arts, 377-3016.

The movie deals with the
dispute in 1977 and 1978
over a Nazi group's proposal
to demonstrate in the vil-
lage of Skokie, outside of
Chicago, a heavily Jewish
area.
Strasberg will portray a
wealthy contributor to the
American ' Civil Liberties
Union who angrily with-
draws his money after the
organization supports the
Nazis' right, which in real
life they did not exercise, to
demonstrate.
