inflation than an enforced recession, unemployment, monetary restric-
tions and high interest rates ... 6% inflation is unacceptable."

When Carter was elected President the prime interest rate was below 7% and
the inflation rate was 6%. Oct. 13, 1980, the prime interest rate was 14% and the
inflation rate 12%.
While promising to reduce the Washington bureaucracy, he created two new
super agencies of education and energy, adding 88,000 part-time employees to
the Federal payroll.

Our Navy has fewer ships today than at the time of Pearl Harbor. The U.S. Air
Force is using bombers older than the pilots flying them. Military pay is so low
that some servicemen require food stamps to feed their families.
