Long Island Unit to Fight Vandals
NEW YORK — Suffolk
County has organized a task
force to combat a rash of
anti-Semitic vandalism di-
rected at Long Island Jews
and synagogues.
The Suffolk Jewish Cen-
ter in Deer Park had crosses
mowed into its lawn last
weekend. Earlier, an auto-
mobile drove onto a
sidewalk, narrowly missing
worshippers leaving serv-
ices.
Several other synagogues
have been vandalized.

The Best of Everything
IF YOU'VE EVER been
to the Vineyards during the
possessions of its previous
owners, chances are you
probably had one of ,these
types of evenings . . . de-
lightful, so-so or very disap-
pointing.
Jane Riney, who used to
sing with Mel Ball at The
Annex (her name was Jane
Pricer then) when Fred
Graczyk had the place,
might have said it all in just
a few words last week aftei-
having dinner with hus-
band Jim . . ., "Doesn't it
seem like something great
is happening again?"
Very clearly, John and
Midge Laffrey have defi-
nitely made things happen
again . . . All the qualities of
a very fine restaurant are
back . . . thanks to the ex-
pertise of people who know
the ways and means of run-
ning a very fine operation.
It's not just a pretty
place anymore ... class
has returned to the Vine-
yards ... The waitresses
in black bowtie, suspen-
ders, white tuxedo shirt
and black pants aren't
just looking snazzy .
they're pleasing people
. . . as is youthful Rick
Kabanuk, executive chef.
Likeour waitress Bar-
bara Handy . . . easily
among the tops anywhere
. . . with her steady smile,
personable ways and par
exce116nte efficiency. .
who seems to be an inheri-
tance with each owner .. .
and a very good one, too- .. .
Barbara started at the
Vineyards when its firs_t
owner, Paul Borgman, had
the place . . . She's been
there through all the bosses
. . . and the delight is again
dancing in her eyes as she
fits in so well with the calm,
efficient hustle and bustle of
yesteryears.
Little
things have
brought back the Vineyards
class . . . like coffee in fresh
cups . . . or sherbert to
cleanse the palate before
entrees . . . Even fresh
'water.
But the food is differ-
ent, too . . . It has the John
and Midge Laffrey touch
. . . of which there are few
better ... You could,
hardly beat the thick,
creamy Boston clam
chowder-, cold crisp salad
and excellent veal Oscar,
so tender with oodles of
crab meat in its delecta-
ble Bernaise sauce.
The John Laffrey's res-
taurant and entertainment
complex . . . Vineyards,
Steak Bar downstairs and
Annex . . . is a winning
combination . . . with John
and Midge a team of love
and working togetherness.
Seems like the only way
they can lose is by locking .
the doors and not letting
anyone in . . . For a time
there, it looked like they
might have to do just that
. . . everybody is going back
now . . . and so many people
had gotten out of the habit
of making what they termed
as unnecessary reserva-
tions at the Vineyards.
But it's a whole new
