Reagan for the Record

Reagan: A man of his convictions.

In 1947, long before he became Governor of California, he
submitted his resignation from the Lakeside Country Club
in Los Angeles. The reason: The club refused to admit a Jew.

An early Supporter of Israel.

In 1948, Reagan became one of the early supporters of the
new State of Israel.

On Economic and Military Aid to Israel

"As an ally of the United States, Israel must have
the means to remain strong and secure. Over
the years, the United States has provided
economic and defense assistance, and a
Reagan administration will maintain this
traditional commitment."

On Weapons to Arab States

On Offending U.S. Arabs

On June 6, 1967, Ronald Reagan responded to a question as
to whether his support of Israel would be viewed with
displeasure by California's Arab population:
"Well, that will be too bad, I think you do
what your conscience dictates."

"I would deny sophisticated weapons of war to those
Arab states that decline to participate in
the peace process with Israel."

A Strategic Asset

In May 1967, when the Jewish Federation Council of
Greater Los Angeles called a mass rally to protest the
blockading of the straits of Tiran and the withdrawal of
U.N. peacekeeping forces from the Sinai, every prominent
office-holder in California was invited. Only three cared or
dared to attend. One of the three was Governor Reagan.

"I have called Israel a strategic asset for the United
States, and I have steadfastly called for us to
support Israel as a trusted ally...When we
jeopardize Israel's security by actions such
such as the U.N. vote, we are not only letting
down an ally, but we are also impairing
our own security."
(Statement to the Press, Miami, Florida, March 8)

Israel, the Defender of Freedom

On the Soviet Union and Importance of Israel

"Indeed, the freedom of the world is at stake in the
Middle East. But who defends that freedom?
Only that one tiny nation, born of a hunger
for freedom and inspired by two decades of the
taste of freedom. Those who made the desert
flower have been forced to lay aside the tools
of peace, and they have stood, manning the
ramparts 'en garde' for these many months
since we last met. They deserve better
from us. They must be provided the weapons to
match the Soviet arms now aimed at their
nation's heart."
May, 1968, at a SALUTE TO FREEDOM.

"...Russian aims for control over the entire region
existed long before Israel's birth in 1948.
Without this bastion of liberal democracy .in
the heart of the area, the Kremlin would be
confirmed to supporting militant regimes
against pro-American conservative governments
which would not be able to divert atten-
tion and energies of the radicals away
from themselves..."
(Special Weekley Column, December 7, 1979)
Defending Western Interests _
"Specific Arab states such as Egypt, friendly to us
at a particular moment, may well be able
and prepared to take a front line position
in defense of Western interest. To the
extent that one or more can participate, so
much the better; but such secondary links
cannot substitute for a strong Israel in the
ever-turbulent Middle East."

Reagan Rallied for Israel

A Book for Israel Bonds

In 1971, Governor Reagan was a major force behind the ef-
fort to obtain legislation authorizing California banks and
savings institutions to invest in State of Israel Bonds.
The legislation signed into law. by Governor Reagan was a
model for similar laws subsequently passed by other states.
It was a step which dramatically increased the sale of Israel
bonds in America.

On Jerusalem

"Jerusalem is now and will continue to be one city,'
undivided, with continuing free access for all."

On the P.L.O.

"Jimmy Carter refuses to brand the PLO as a
terrorist organization. I have no hesitation in
doing so...They are terrorists and they should
be identified as such."

On Soviet Jewry & Jerusalem

In Governor Reagan's moving speech .to the 1980
Republican Convention, his concern was expressed for the
plight of Soviet Jewry. Only two weeks before, he had
forcefully denounced the infamous resolution on Jerusalem
adopted by the United Nation's Security Council. These
expressions are not mere campaign rhetoric. The Los
Angeles Times went out of its way on May 30 to report
that Governor Reagan has been pro-Israel since the
nation's creation in 1948.

On Peace in the Middle East

"The United States should not try to force a peace
settlement upon Israel and her neighbors.
Resolutions in the United Nations which
undermine Israel's positions and isolate her
people should be vetoed because they undermine
progress toward peace."
