JNF Pays Tribute to U-M President Shapiro

By HEIDI PRESS
Calling the negotiations
between Israel and Egypt "a
little bit of light in the
Mideast," Yoseph P. (Paul)
Kedar, consul general of Is-
rael in New York, said that
these talks were "the best
hope for the stability that is
necessary" in the area.
Speaking Wednesday
night at the testimonial
dinner for University of
Michigan President Harold
Shapiro and Mrs. Shapiro,
held on behalf of the Jewish
National Fund, Kedar said
that Israel was the only
democracy in the Middle
East and "democracies do
not make war."
"We can stand on our re-
cord," he said. "There is
nothing in Jewish history
that shows that Jews
threatened anyone's life or
anyone's pursuit of happi-
ness."
Alluding to the sus-
pended negotiations be-
tween Israel and Egypt,
Kedar said that "Israeli
strength drew (Egyptian
President Anwar) Sadat
to Jerusalem. Without
that strength, there
would not be peace or an
Israel."
He added that a peace
treaty with Egypt was
possible because Israel pro-
posed autonomy.
Kedar said there was a
trend toward appeasement
of the Arabs by nations who
were pressuring Israel to re-
linquish Jerusalem.
"Appeasement to the
Arabs is bound to failure if
they are not committed to
give up something," Kedar
said.
Kedar told the several
hundred guests at Cong.
Shaarey Zedek, gathered
for the Shapiro testimo-
nial, that the Arab-Israeli
conflict had nothing to do
with the Iran-Iraq con-
flict, the new Syria-Soviet
pact and the holding of
the U.S. hostages in Iran.
The affair was the occa-
sion to honor the U-M's first
Jewish president and his
wife with a forest of 25,000
trees in Israel, to be planted
in the American Bicenten-
nial Park. Following a
lengthy introduction by Dr.
William Haber, former
dean of the College of Liter-

and adviser to the executive
offices at the U-M, filled
with anecdotes and praise
Dr. Shapiro said that there
were "special links that
characterized" the dinner.
Shapiro said that the JNF
provided a "physical, con-
tiguous link" when it pur-
chased land in pre-state Is-
rael to tie together the
Jewish settlements. He al-
luded to a link to Torah and
finally referred to "schol-
arship, JNF and Israel —
and I hope this link con-
tinues."
He expressed gratitude
on behalf of himself and
Mrs. Shapiro for the honor
given them and said that
the tribute "was a symbol of
continuing generosity to
JNF." Dr. Shapiro, who
bears the same name as the
founder of JNF 80 years
ago, said that "unexpected
pleasures" were derived out
of the event.
"It began to rekindle
memories of my child-
hood and early memories
ofJNF." He alluded to his
youth in Montreal, where
he attended religious
school during the time of
the Holocaust, and re-
marked about the special
significance the JNF
Blue Box held for him.
Greetings were brought
to the Shapiros from Wayne
State University President
Thomas Bonner and Uni-
versity of Detroit President
Fr. Robert Mitchell.
Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion President George Zelt-
zer said in his message,
that the "JNF represented
the true faith of the Jewish
People — planning for the
future by planting today."
He expressed congratula-
tions to the Shapiros on be-
half of the Federation.
Immediate past president
of Detroit JNF Carmi
Slomovitz recognized the
newly elected president,
Ruben Isaacs, and appealed
for renewed efforts on be-
