Midwestern Young Israel Branches to Convene Here
The Midwest branches of
Young Israel have an-
nounced the convening of
the second annual Midwest
conference, to be held at the
Young Israel Congrega-
tions of Greenfield, Oak-
Woods and Southfield Oct.
24-26.
The conference commit-
tee in formation, chaired by
Milton Duchan, the newly
elected chairman of the
Metropolitan Detroit
Young Israel Council,
includes: Rabbis James
Gordon, Feivel Wagner,
Joshua Sperka and Samuel
Prero; Rabbi Shubert Spero,
Cleveland, Ohio, and Rabbi
Jeffrey Bienenfeld, St.
Louis, Mo., Harry Blitz,

Livonia Plans `Char Dinner

"Chai' dinner 6:30 p.m. Oct.

The dinner will be the oc-
casion to honor Sarah
Smith, synagogue trea-
surer, for 21 years of dedi-
cated service to the congre-
gation."

Temple Emanu-El to Install
Rabbi Steinger Next Week
Temple Emanu-El will
celebrate the installation of
Rabbi Lane B. Steinger dur-
ing festivities to be held Oct.
10 and 11. At this time,
Rabbi Milton Rosenbaum
will become senior rabbi.
Rabbi Steinger was born
in St. Louis, Mo., and was
graduated from Washing-
ton and Lee University and
Hebrew Union College.
He has served as student
rabbi at Cong. Emanu-El of
Welch, W. Va., and Temple
Chai in Buffalo Grove, Ill.
Before coming to Temple
Emanu-El as associate
rabbi in 1976, he was rabbi
at Temple Emanu-El in
Greensburg, Pa.
At 6 p.m. Oct. 10, there
will be a Shabat dinner to
be followed by the instal-
lation Sabbath service at
8:15 p.m. The installation
service will be lead by
Cantor Norman Rose;
Lyle Parr, president of
the temple; and Rabbi El-
liot Rosenstock of Tem-
ple Beth-El of South
Bend, Inc. Following the
service the temple sis-
terhood will host an oneg
Shabat.
A harvest festival picnic
will be held 7:30 p.m. Oct.
11 at the temple. Israeli
music will be provided by
Abraham Ben Ze'ev and his
group for folk dancing and
singing.
Rabbi Steinger has
served as the community
coordinator of the Boat
People Project for the
Jewish Welfare Federation,
Jewish Family Service and
Metropolitan Detroit Fed-
eration of Reform
Synagogues. He is a
member of the board of the
esettlement Service and
was recently named to the
commission on social action
of the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations.
He also serves on the Rus-
sian Acculturation Com-
mittee of the Jewish Corn-
munity Center and is a
member of the Jewish Voca-
tional Service Task Force
for Russian Immigrants. He
also is a member of the
Michigan Regional Advi-
sory Board of the Anti-

Council of Young Israel
for the past 25 years, will
be the convention keyn-
ote guest speaker. Na-
tional President
Nathaniel Saperstein will
be featured Oct. 25, and
the National Council of
Young Israel, Washing-
ton D.C. representative,
Judah M. Lipsitz will
close the convention with
a report on the Capitol
scene and its meaning to
American Jewry.
Entertainment and a
melave malka and brunch,
as well as home hospitality,
have been arranged at a fee.
The following branches

N.Y.; Pittsburgh, Pa.,
Cleveland; Chicago, Ill.; St.
Louis, Mo.; and Detroit.
