It is customary to cover
the Sabbath halla with a
cover on the Sabbath table.
Several explanations are of-
fered by different sources
for this practice.
One reason offered is that
covering the loaves makes
them appear to be some-
thing special for the Sab-
bath and thus they are not
ordinary loaves of bread.
This falls into the general
practice of making every-
thing we have for the Sab-
bath to be of special signifi-
cance.
A second reason given is
that the Sabbath loaves are
representative of the man-
nah which the Jews con-
sumed in the wilderness on
their way to the Promised
Land. The mannah was
covered both from above
and beneath. Thus the Sab-
bath loaves are enclosed be-
neath by the table cloth and
above by the special cover.

Hebrew U. Sets
Toronto Meeting

NEW YORK — North
American friends of the He-
brew Universiaty of
Jerusalem will meet in To-
ronto Oct. 9-12 for a confer-
ence on the university's role
in the 1980s.
Speakers will include
university president Dr.
Avraham Harman, and
former ambassador to the
U.S. and now university
vice president Simha
Dinitz.

The third reason, perhaps
the best known of all three,
explains that the Sabbath
loaves are covered because
the procedure on the Sab-
bath meal is different than
the procedure during the
ordinary days of the week.
Usually, the blessing is
made over the bread as the
first act preceding the meal.
On the SAbath, the bless-
ing is first made over the
wine.

Hospital Spurns
Gift Tied to
Name Change

HAIFA — Rothschild
Hospital in Haifa has
turned down a $500,000
contribution from the
English branch of the
Rothschild family. The con-
tribution was offered on the
condition that the hospital
change its name.
A new wing has been
under construction at
58-year-old hospital s
1973 and the hospital is
short $1 million to complete
the project.
The hospital was named
in 1922 when Baroness Ada
de Rothschild donated the
land. The British
Rothschilds say they are not
connected with any Israeli
hospitals and they do not
want others to think them
responsible for the Haifa
hospital.
