Rise of Islam
Harsh for Jews

Except for very short
periods, Jews have been
persecuted and discrimi-
nated against by the Arabs
ever since the rise of Islam
in the seventh century CE.
They were never considered
equal citizens; they were
compelled to live in segre-
gated quarters, and they
were forced to embrace
Islam or pay the "Jizya" — a
humiliating protection tax.
Despite these adverse
conditions, the Jews resid-
ing in Arab lands have been
able to contribute signific-
antly to the economic. social
and cultural development of
their countries of residence.

Days of Penitence

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

The Days of Awe are Rosh
Hashana — New Year, Yam
HaKippurim — the Day of
Atonement, and the entire
10-day period including
both — the Aseres Yemay
Teshuva — Ten Days of
Penitence.
Starting before and going
through this period, the Jew
focuses on the vulnerability
of life and the limits of the
human. We rediscover that
our entire life is God's
mercy; by miracle we stand
— but miracles may not
happen everyday." (Rabbi
Israel Salanter).
The image of being on
trial for our life which
dominates this period poses
the question: Is our life jus-
tified? Are we grateful and
in love with our existence?
This makes the period a
time of judgment, self-
evaluation, self-criticism
and guilt. At its climax we
re-enact death by denying
the normal human pleas-
ures. But the deeper result
and goal is a new apprecia-
tion of life.
