`Life in Lodz' on Display
at Yeshiva U. Museum

was taken prisoner by
the Germans. After his re-
lease he returned home
only to discover that
Lodz had been ravaged
and his family missing.
Dzienciarski managed to
survive the Holocaust by
escaping to the east and
the Russian frontier be-
fore Lodz's Jewish ghetto
was leveled.
Dzienciarski considers
his paintings his major
achievement, and an histor-
ical record which exists for
future generations. "They
are partially a documentary
record and partially a per-
sonal vision depicting a way
of life which was suddenly
erased, and which, tragi-
cally, can never again exist.
"There is something in my
paintings to which all can
relate, but I believe they
will have the greatest im-
pact on the generations of
young people who want to
During the War he serv- know what the Holocaust
ed in the Polish Army and destroyed."

NEW YORK — "In My
Mind's Eye: Jewish Life in
Lodz, 1920-1939," 35 paint-
ings by Polish born artist,
David Dzienciarski, depict-
ing the life and culture of
his native town prior to its
Holocaust destruction
will be the featured exhibit
at the Yeshiva University
Museum starting Sept. 7
and running through mid-
December.
The paintings, all oil on
canvas, were done over the
past 20 years in Israel, to
which Dzienciarski emi-
grated in 1948, and which
he left recently to work and
exhibit in the United
States.
The son of a lumber and
furniture merchant, Dzien-
ciarski, who was born in
1912, spent much of his
youth traveling by motorcy-
cle to various towns and vil-
lages throughout Poland.
