Ford Hospital Specialist Has Close Ties With Israel
Dr. Haim I. Bicher of
West Bloomfield has close
ties with Israel. He is also
director of Henry Ford Hos-
pital's Advanced Modalities
Cancer Treatment Center, a
new center dedicated June
20 which uses regional
• hyperthermia — heat gen-
erated by microwaves — to
halt tumor growth in cer-
tain patients. i
As explained by Dr.

Bicher, who graduated from
Hadassah Medical School in
Israel in 1962 and later
earned a PhD in phar-
macology from Tel Aviv
University before coming to
the United States, hyper-
thermia is based on the fact
that cancer cells are less
able to withstand heat than
normal cells because of poor
blood circulation in the tis-
sue. When heat is applied to
diseased tissue where circu-
lation is slow and the cells
are hypoxic (have a low
level of oxygen), the tem-
perature of the tissue rises
and the tissue is destroyed.
Since Dr. Bicher came to
Ford Hospital in 1978, 85
patients have been treated
and have shown 60 percent
complete tumor regression
and 35 percent partial re-
sponse to hyperthermia
treatments.
Dr. Bicher's interest in
medicine and medical re-
search began when he
was growing up in
Argentina where his fam-
ily along with thousands
of other Russian Jews
had migrated. He entered
medical school at the
University of Buenos
Aires at age 16.
In 1957, he - joined mem-
bers of his family who had
decided to move to Israel.
He was accepted at Hadas-
sah Medical School in
Jerusalem and earned his
MD there in 1962.
In 1968 he decided to try
American opportunities. He
__accepted a position at the
University of South
Carolina Medical School. In
1971, however, he took
leave from the university
and with his wire Aida re-
turned to Israel where he
felt he was needed.
He was assigned to the Is-
raeli navy and was
stationed in Haifa where he
served for a year while con-
tinuing his medical re-
search as time permitted.
After the year, he returned
to South Carolina with his
family, then later moved to
Arkansas and then to Buf-
falo, N.Y. There he was
associate chief and head of
the Clinical Research Sec-
tion of the Department of
Radiation Medicine at Ros-
well Park Memorial Insti-
tute. He accepted the posi-
tion at Henry Ford Hospital
in 1978.
