SMALL BEQUESTS
BUILD A
STRONG ISRAEL

If the tradition of including the Jewish
National Fund in the Will of every Jew were
invariably followed, sufficient resources would
be accumulated to ensure the future of - the
yOung Jewish State on a sound basis of land
development, social welfare, and ;justice.

A bequest to the Jewish National Fund
should be as traditional as having a Blue Box
in one's home.

You may want your bequest to be.
dedicated to afforestation, to a village, a
Nachlah, to a children's play area, to perpetual
yahrzeit or kaddish, or to some form of
permanent tribute in the names of persons
dear to you.

U.S. Jewish Coach Will Aid ADL Claims Costa Rica,
Egyptian Basketball Program Venezuela Seek PLO Ties

By HASKELL COHEN
(Copyright 1980, JTA, Inc.)

It was agreed, through
the intercession of the Fed-
eration of International
Basketball Associations
late in the winter, that a
program should be de-
veloped between Egypt and
Israel in the basketball
arena.
I met, late in February in
Tel Aviv, with the technical
director of basketball for
Egypt, Fouad Abdel Kheir,
and officials of the Israel
Basketball Federation. It
was agreed that I would
continue on to Egypt and
meet with Abdul Kheir,
Abdul Azim Ashry, the
executive secretary for the
Federation International
Basketball Association for
the continent of Africa. In
addition, he served techni-
cally as head of the Egyp-
tian Federation.
After a week of consulta-
tions it was decided to help
Egypt start strengthening
its internal hoop program
by first attending the Dial
Clinic in the U.S. and sec-
ond receiving an American
coach to work with their na-
tional teams during the
summer months.
I volunteered to secure
a coach for the Egyptians
and they appreciated the
offer. Summing up my
courage, I answered
Ashry by telling him "I
have an excellent coach;
he's not a college coach,
but he's had experience
in the high school ranks
and the professional
ranks, with the NBA, as a
scout for both the Detroit
Pistons and the Houston
Rockets.
"Abdul, the man I have in
mind coached the United
States Maccabia team to
the Maccabia Game cham-
pionship in 1977, when the
United States defeated a
highly favored Israeli team

in the finals by one point.
Obviously he is of the
Jewish faith."
Ashry smiled and an-
swered casually, "Haskell, I
don't care what faith the
coach pursues. I want a
coach who can help our
team and if you have the
man, send him along."
As a result of this conver-
sation, Coach Eddie
Krinsky of Westbury High
School will be leaving this
week to work all summer
long with the Egyptian na-
tional teams. Krinsky is
now Westbury High
School's student faculty ad-
viser. An excellent basket-
ball teacher, he goes to
Egypt with the highest
recommendations from our
college and professional
coaches.
Krinsky is a graduate
of Harvard University
where he captained the
baseball team and was a
star on the basketball
team. He is a classmate of
Sen. Edward Kennedy
(D-Mass.) and well re-
members his days in
Cambridge, Mass., with
the volatile solon.
As chairman of the U.S.
Committee Sports for Israel
Basketball Committee I had
the opportunity to observe
Krinsky during the Mac-
cabia Games in Israel in the
summer of '77. The head
coach was Dolph Schayes,
former great ex-NYU, ex-
Syracuse Nats and a coach
in the NBA with the
Philadelphia Warriors.
Krinsky served as co-coach
and he did an excellent job
in scouting the Israeli Na-
tional Team, in the prelimi-
nary games, which set up
the final between U.S. and
Israel.

NEW YORK* — Costa
Rica may be on the verge of
abandoning its close friend-
ship with Israel for the sake
of Arab votes in the United
Nations, the Anti-
Defamation League of Bnai
Brith warned last week.
According to two ADL of-
ficials who have just re-
turned from a fact finding
tirp to Central America,
high ranking Costa Rican
officials received an Arab
delegation this week. The
delegation will include
representatives of the
Palestine Liberation
Organization.
A new PLO threat in
Venezuela was also re-
ported by the officials —
Abraham H. Foxman, asso-
ciate national director and
head of ADL's international
affairs division, and Radbi
Morton M. Rosenthal, direc-
tor of the agency's Latin
American affairs depart-
ment.
"A PLO presence in
Costa Rica," Foxman
said, "would threaten the
stability of this politically
volatile region, in view of
PLO contacts with the
revolutionary Left in
Guatemala and El Sal-
vador." He added that "it
would also be a great set-
back for Israel, because
Israel has not had a more
constant friend and ally
than Costa Rica. Costa
Rica has consistently

supported Israel at the
UN and at other interna-
tional forums.
Foxman noted that Costa
Rica has already veered
slightly away from Israel.
Since the 1978 election of
President Carazo. Odio,
Costa Rica has altered its
traditional voting pattern
in support of Israel and on
issues important to Israel.
Declaring that ADL is
worried about the situation
in Venezuela, Rabbi Ro-
senthal quoted informed
sources as saying that the
country's Ministry of Mines
has forwarded to the
Foreign Ministry a recom-
mendation that Venezuela
authorize the opening of a
PLO office in Caracas.
The Venezuelan Jewish
community, he said, has ex-
pressed its concern in meet-
ings with government offi-
cials and in full page news-
paper advertisements.
