Steinberg Memorial Concert
Focuses on 'Time for Freedom'

/—

Temple Israel will pre-
sent its annual Mildred S.
Steinberg Memorial Con-
cert 8 p.m. June 29 at the
temple.
The event will be the last
official program to take
place at the present build-
ing prior to the congrega-
tion's move to the suburbs
in late summer.
The concert is entitled "A
Time for Freedom," and is a
lusical mosaic spanning
ale years from biblical
times to the recent trial of
Anatoly Shcharansky, the
Soviet dissident.
The program is being
held in cooperation with
the American Confer-
ence of Cantors and the
Guild of Temple Musi-
cians, who are meeting
jointly for their annual
convention in Detroit.
Featured in the concert
will be Rabbi M. Robert
Syme, Rabbi Harold S. Loss
and Rabbi Leon Fram, rab-
bis of Temple Israel, who
each will introduce a seg-
ment of the program.
The event is planned by
the music committee of the
congregation, under the di-
rection of Bluma Ellman,
and will be introduced by
Cantor Harold Orbach.
Participating artists in-
clude Cantor Arturo Sergi,
of Houston, recently re-
turned from an appearance
with the Metropolitan Op-

era; and Cantor Barbara
Ostfeld, of Temple Beth El,
Great Neck, N.Y., the first
woman invested as a cantor
in the Reform movement.
Others who will par-
ticipate are Cantor David
Benedict, of Lawrence,
N.Y.; Cantor Mim
Frishman, Croton on
Hudson, N.Y.; and Cantor
Raymond Smolover,
executive director of the
ACC.
There will be two dance
sequences, one performed
by Richard Orbach, of the
Alvin Ailey Dance Troupe;
and the other by the Wayne
State University Dancers,
choreographed by Paula
Kramer.
The Kenneth Jewell
Chorale will sing under the
direction of Eric Freudig-
man, and musicians will in-
clude Janet Smarr, soprano;
Roger Marcus, guitar; and
Davis Gloff, of Temple
Emanu-El.
Musical settings date
from the "Trial of Job," and
continue through "The Ex-
pulsion from Spain," "17th
Century Mantua," "The In-
auguration of the
Synagogue in Siena" and
"18th Century Casale Mon-
ferrato."
A new work byk Charles
Davidson will conclude the
program. It is the program's
theme, "A Time for Free-
dom," an oratorio based on
the Shcharansky trial.

The concert is open to the
public at no charge; how-
ever, tickets must be ob-
tained from the office of
Temple Israel, 863-7769.
