Fire Damages
Zionist Center

A fire set by an arsonist at
the Zionist Cultural Center
last week did an estimated
$6,000-$7,000 damage to
the rear of the building.
According to Sidney Sil-
verman, president of the
Zionist Organization of De-
troit, gasoline was appar-
ently poured on a rear door
of the building during the
night of May 7-8. The
gasoline seeped under the
door into a furnace room.
When the gasoline was
ignited, several mops
caught on fire. A copper fit-
ting on a water line melted,
spraying the fire with
water. However, the electri-
cal, heating and cooling sys-
tems were damaged.
Southfield fire officials
are investigating the blaze.
