Hebrew U. Honors for Emma
Schaver Recall Earlier Efforts

The privilege of bringing
songs of renewed hope to
those who survived Hitler,
as a member of the first cul-
tural mission to visit the
displaced persons camps in
Germany in 1945 and 1946,
remains a highlight of her
life, says Mrs. Emma
Schaver. She will receive
the Scopus Award from the
Hebrew University at a
luncheon noon Sunday at
gong. Shaarey Zedek, "as
recognition of her many
years of devoted service to
her people, her community
and the state of Israel."
She recalls the moments
when her brethren would
stand, gaunt from starva-
tion, in remnants of clo-
thing, just waiting for her to
sing a- Jewish song. It

nourishment to carry on,

these experiences to her vis-
its to the emerging state of
Israel, where she appeared
before the young men and
women who made up the
meager
defense forces dur-
,

ing the War of Indepen-
dence, and told of their de-
termination to build a bet-
ter world for tomorrow.
It was this spirit that in-
spired her to support the
causes of higher education
in Detroit and abroad. To-
gether with her late hus-
band, Morris, a fund for
publication of Jewish
studies was established at
Wayne State University
and she has contributed to
Hillel Day School and the
Chabad Student Center at
the University of Michigan,
as well as the Chabad voca-
tional schools in Israel.

Founder and chairman
of the Jerusalem Vocal
Arts Group, she spends a
good part of the year in
the Holy City, taking vol-
unteer roles in the opera-
tion of the Hebrew Uni-
versity of Jerusalem,
where she has helped
found the Harry S. Tru-
man Institute for the Ad-
vancement of Peace. Mrs.
Schaver has been a
