WHEN DOWNTOWN
VISIT DETROIT'S
NEWEST, MOST FASHIONABLE
RESTAURANT

Danny Raskin's

LISTENING
POST

ON THE WAY to To-
ronto via Air Canada, De-
bbie and Frank Wald and
Marlene and Leonard Re-
ider saw the airlines maga-
zine called "Enroute" .. .
and so was born the name
for the new store with
women's fashions in
sportswear and casual
wear, plus costume "junk
jewelry."
Enroute hadn't been open
yet, but the four were on a
buying trip for the unnamed
store across the hall from
Bloch's Clothes in Orchard
Mall, Orchard Lake Rd. and
Maple.
It's run by Frank's-wife
Debbie, who creates images
from windows to the woman
customers . . . from the mo-
ment that gal walks into the
store . . . Debbie is becoming
known as the "new look"
image-maker . . . Enroute is
one of the few places with
items that can't be gotten in
too many other stores.
Bloch's Clothes, owned
by Jules Olen, Frank and
son-in-law Leonard (Mar-
1L..ne is Jules' and Ruth's
daughter) is among the
oldest active clothing
stores around. -
Jules opened his doors in
1932 on 12th and Clair-
mount under another name.
Unless he moved to
Texas, Jules never thought
he'd see the day a customer
would come in and buy 20
felt cowboy hats to give his
friends . . . In fact, even his
foresight never gave vent to
the fact that Bloch's would
even carry anything west-
ern . . . That's a big boom
today, and Jules, Frank and
Leonard are well supplied
with cowboy hats . . . espe-
cially th-e very popular
straw ... and naturally
cowboy boots, also.
Debbie doesn't stay out of
the western picture . . . Her
Enroute store is well for-
tified with jeans.
ATTORNEY MORT
ESKIN wants to get his
weight down to 170 . . . and
is already on the way ... 40
pounds lighter than the 230
he started at.
CPR CLASSES .
(coronary pulmonary resus-
citation) . . . are free .. .
held every 15 minutes til 9 -
p.m. today at Pontiac Sil-
verdome.
ALUMNI GROUP OF
Signia Theta Delta Sorority
from Wayne University
(one of two Jewish sororities
there at the time and the
original from which
sprouted the national group
know-n as Phi Sigma) that
last year looked for sisters
and found 65 localites to
attend a first reunion
luncheon, is trying to-locate
the rest of its former mem-
bers. •
It had formed a chapter
last year . . . now numbers
over 125 . . . and is an active.
alumnae. group known as
Sigma Theta Delta Founda-
tion . . . for philanthropic

and scholarship endeavors.
Its second luncheon is
slated for May 17 at Topin-
ka's, Seven Mile and Tele-
graph . . . and the first reci-
pient of the Sigma Theta
Delta Outstanding Woman
of the Year Award will be
presented to one of its own
sisters ... Marian Shifman,
first woman president of the
Jewish Community Council
of Metropolitan Detroit.
At last year's luncheon,
many of the members
hadn't seen each other in 40
years.
Gals to call for tickets are
Ruth Singer, 352-0948 or
Blanche Bauman, 557-0478
. . . Dr. Sylvia Koss is
president of Sigma Theta
Delta Foundation.
THE SURPRISE 40th
birthday party for Harriet
Wolok by husband Sandy,
at Northfield Hilton's
Wicker Works, is one she'll
always be able to watch .. .
The entire evening with 50
family members and friends
was completely video-taped.
WHILE SITTING
UNDER the dryer at How-
ard Weiss' Snips at
Applegate -Square, a reader
chanced to overhear a com-
ment made by a woman who
was anticipating in-law
problems already, ,though
her daughter only a short
time ago had become
engaged . . . The woman had
remarked to her beautician,
"I like the boy my daughter
is engaged to, but his
mother . . . well she's simply
the kind of woman who
makes lokshen kugel and
doesn't even play cards!"
LOOKING BACK ON

SEPT. 12, 1969 . . .
"Madelyn Gruskin, who had
broken her ankle falling
down the steps at home
while hubby Ben, in charge
of the liquor division of
Cunningham Drug Stores,
was attending a convention
in Atlanta, Ga., had a won-
derful souvenir to give
when they took her cast off
. . . while having dinner
with Ben, and Phil and Es-
telle Berke, at Lafayette-
Orleans Lounge, Tom
Jones, appearing the next
night at Olympia, auto-
graphed it for her . . . The
nurse of Madelyn's doctor
wrapped it up with careful
reverence to give to one of
her grandchildren."
NOV. 28, 1969 . . . "The
bracelet Irene Cassels
bought in Italy and thought
she lost at The Rascal House
on 10 Mile and Southfield
recently, has been found .. .
by herself in her car.
HY BLACKMAN is the
one to call for tickets to City
of Hope, Mr. and Mrs. Group
"Night of Games," Tuesday
at Roma's of Bloomfield on
Telegraph . . . Hy's number
is 545-3364.
