JTA Columnist Dead at 84

NEW YORK (JTA) —
David Schwartz, roving
newspaper reporter, Jewish
Telegraphic Agency colum-
nist and special editorial
writer for the national Is-
rael Bond Organization,
died April 29 at age 84.
Mr. Schwartz, widely
known among Jewish
readers for the mild and oc-
casionally wry observations
on Jewish personalities and
events, never married. Born
in Brunswick, Ga., his
father fled with his family
from Brunswick to escape
influenza epidemic and
family settled in At-
Farita, a residence of nearly
two decades before moving
again to St. Paul, Minn.
The future columnist
enrolled at the University of

Ellis M. Thal

Ellis M. Thal, retired dis-
trict sales manager for the
Dictaphone Corp., died
April 30 at age 86.
Born in Sparta, Mich.,
Mr. Thal retired in 1959. He
was the assistant to the
president and counselor to
the company until 1969.
He was a charter
member, first vice president
and past board member of
Temple Israel. He also was a
past board member of Tem-
ple Beth El.
Mr. Thal was a member
of the building committee
for the Jewish Commu-
nity Center when it was
located on Woodward
and Holbrook.
He leaves three sons,
Richard, Donald L. and
- Bruce E.; a sister, Mrs.
Jerome (Rena) Kanter; 16
grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren. Serv-
ices 10:30 a.m. today at Ira
Kaufman Chapel.

Minnesota, but dropped out
after a year to seek a report-
er's job. Over the years, he
worked on newspapers in
Minneapolis, West Vir-
ginia, Ohio, North Dakota
and Texas. He eventually
wound up in New York,
joining the staff of the Israel
BondOrganization at its in-
ception in December 1951.
He retired in 1971.
Mr. Schwartz began his
association with the JTA
in the early 1930s as a
staff member of the daily
news bulletin. He 'v-
itiated his JTA
"Panorama," in the mid-
1930s. The column was
widely used by publica-
tions in this country and
abroad. During his years
at the JTA he published
several books based on
his cohimns.
He was famous for his ap-
plications of American his-
tory and the history of the
Jewish people, particularly
Zionist history, to current
events affecting American
Jewry and Israel.

Louis Malamud,
Broadway Cantor

NEW YORK — Louis
Malamud, cantor and sex-
ton of the Actors' Temple,
died April 25 at age 75. He
served as cantor of the tem-
ple for 35 years.
He was familiar among
show people and at one time
or another counted in his
minyan George Jessel,
Sophie Tucker, Joe E.
Lewis, Eddie Fisher, Red
Buttons and Edward G.
Robinson.
Mr. Malamud once sang
in a choir with famed opera
singer Richard Tucker.
