WHEN
SCHWARTZ and Michael
Tarrow opened their
Rhinoceros restaurant on
Riopelle, Oct. 7, 1978,
neither probably realized
that in less than two years
they would have one of the
finest young chefs around
working for them.
She's Miriam Rubin,
graduate of the Culinary
Institute of America in New
York . . . and trained at
Four Seasons in New York
. . . Look at this record . . . A
native Detroiter, Miriam
has worked here at the Lon-
don Chop House, Caucus
Club and Money Tree . . . In
Washington, D.C. she was
at the very fine Le Pavillon,
an exclusively nouvelle
cuisine restaurant.
The Rhinoceros, being
considered by many among
Detroit's top dining spots,
serves continental fare .. .
but specializes in fresh fish
. . . some of which cannot be
gotten in too many other
restaurants.
OPEN ONLY TWO
months . . . and seating 130
people . . . Old Budapest on
Wyandotte in Windsor is
that area's only authentic
Hungarian restaurant . . . It
is owned_ by Steve Eden.
CHUCK MUER recently
launched the opening of
Sunday brunch and lunch at
his River Crab restaurant
on the St. Clair River . . . It's
Chuck's sixth season at
River Crab . . . with George
Lonsberry manager.
Sunday brunch served
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. is
$7.95 for adults and teena-
gers and $3.75 for children

Several new dishes are
featured, including cold
poached blue fish and sal-
mon, potato pancakes and

livers . . . There's lox on spe-
cial homemade bread,
creamed finnan haddie,
sauteed mushrooms,
quiche, plain and blueberry
pancakes cooked at the buf-
fet, scrambled eggs, fried
potatoes, breakfast meats,
apple dumplings with
Bavarian cream sauce and
numerous muffins and pas-
tries.
River Crab and the adja-
cent River Crab Motel Inn
are located on River Rd.,
two miles north of St. Clair,
Mich.
DENNIS KOWALSKI,
manager at Jax Kar Wash
on 10 Mile and Greenfield,
asks why the Summit res-
taurant atop Plaza Hotel in
the Renaissance Center
downtown charges $1 if you
take the elevator up to eat
. . . Could it be that there's
no charge if you walk up the
72 flights . . . or get there by
helicopter?
OSCAR'S on Northwest-
ern Hwy. will have a
"Happy Time" 3-7 p.m.
every Friday starting April
18 . . . Drinks will be one-
half price and hors
d'oeuvres will be served .. .
No disco . . . there'll be danc-
ing to a live band.
The April 27 "Country
Fun" at Oscar's looks like
it'll be a sell-out . . . Ad-
vance reservations are
being taken . . . Call Carol
Klein, 626-484 0 . . . Don't
think there'll be too many,
if any, tickets, left at the
door.
THERE'S NOW A sec-
ond night of music at Cafe
Fior on Northwestern and-
12 Mile . . . to go along with
the successful Sunday night
jazz biggie featuring George
"Sax" Benson among the
foursome.
Now Cafe Fior owner
John Young_ has added
"Blue Monday"... with the
es Band
Progressive Blu
from the Soup Kitchen ..
The Blues Band gives out .
with its primitive sounds
from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
... It's a five-piece group
that includes a classic blues
singer . . . There's guitarist
and vocalist Arkansas
Willie Warren; Martin
Groso, drums and vocals;
Lowell Cauffield, guitar;
Keith Herber, bass; and
Chicago's Don Hankins on
saxophone.
SINGING PAINTER
Hank Olifson is still doing
his songster bits around
town . . . even though on
temporary disability with
the City of Detroit when a
bus fell from its hoist while
Hank was putting on Mayor
Coleman Young decals,
"Moving Detroit Forward"
and striping the transport.
. . .
Luckily, he rolled out of
the way as the bus came
down . . . and only tore right
knee ligaments and cartil-
age . . . Hank, former singer
