State Department's Anti-Israelism Recalled
Former Johnson Ad-
ministration aide John P.
Roche, writing in the De-
troit News on March 14, was
reminded of past incidents
of State Department anti-
Israelism by the Carter
Administration turn-about
on the UN Security Council
resolution condemning Is-
rael.
Roche states:
The historical fact is the
Department of State has
never liked Israel.

The kidush on Saturday
morning is referred to as
"Kidush Raba" (the great
kidush).
The main kidush was re-
cited on Friday evening. Its
recitation would signify
that all the meals eaten that
Sabbath are dedicated to
the Sabbath making it un-
necessary to recite the
kidush on any other Sab-
bath meal.
However, since a night of
sleep interrupts the two
meals (i.e., Friday night and
Saturday morning) the rab-
bis added the requirement
to also recite kidush before
the Sabbath morning meal.
Since its lesser impor-
tance might lead people to
ignore or forget it, the rab-
bis called it "Kidush Raba"
so as to warn the people not
to forget it since it is also
required by rabbinic ordi-
nance.
