EXODUS. HOMECOMING.
Throughout Jewish history, our People has known the
pain of departure, of wandering homeless, of being strangers
in lands we wanted desperately to be our own.
Pesach and the hagadic retelling of the Exodus from
Egypt remind us of that special sadness that has been part of
our national psyche.
But Passover also reminds us that after every Exodus we
have experienced a rebirth. So it is with the Jews who have
recently come to us from the Soviet Union — a contemporary
exodus which touches our communal life in Detroit.
In search of freedom, they risk all to leave. Whether they
choose Israel or America, their exodus becomes our own. It is
as though, so the Hagada tells us, we took the journey our-
selves.
Many have found haven in our community, where we are
blessed with a long memory andwhere the assistance given to
our parents' generation is repeated in our own time.
While continuing their support of our aged, our youth, our
troubled and our handicapped at home and overseas — meet-
ing needs intensified by inflation — the JeWish Welfare Feder-
ation and its local agencies are working valiantly to care for
our newcomers.
But our institutions cannot do it alone. They need, first,
the money to continue vital programs of resettlement here
and in Israel. They need, second, the commitment of time and
dedication that each of us is duty-bound to make toward the
cultural and spiritual absorption of these Russian Jews.
Therefore, we, the Rabbis of Metropolitan Detroit, call
upon the members of our congregations, upon every Jew, to
make his or her best contribution to the 1980 Allied Jewish
Campaign-Israel Emergency Fund.
And, further, we urge every Jewish household to reach
out and answer the longings of our newcomers to become one
with ,us. By opening our homes to them on Passover, by
opening our hearts in a gesture of community spirit, we will
show that we remember our past. And we will let no Jew
remain a stranger among us.
