President Navon dwelt
on the three main sub-
jects Mr. Allon devoted
himself to in recent years
— strive towards a peace-
ful settlement through
ensuring Israel's security
and respecting its
neighbors, creating a de-
eper link with Diaspora
Jews and finding new
paths for the Isareli
youth.
At the gravesite, former
Israeli Premier Yitzhak
Rabin spoke of Allon as the

and now." "Allon," said Ra-
bin, "has proved the anthem
of the Palmach — we are
always first — to be true, in
his original way of think-
ing, in his original planning
of battles and in going with
his soldiers."
Attending the funeral
were many Druze notables
and villagers, Arab nota-
bles and chieftains, Chris-
tians from South Lebanon
headed by Major Haddad,
and kibutzniks from all over
the country. There were
flowers from many foreign
legations and from settle-
ments and organizations.
Mr. Allon was one of the
giants of the younger lead-
ership that fo,unded the
state of Israel and governed
it for most of its existence.
A leader of. Labor
Zionism, a hero of Israel's
War of Independence
and one of the major fig-
ures of the Labor Party in
government and in oppo-
sition, Allon never
achieved his goal of be-
coming premier.
Born in Kfar Tabor, Allon
(nee Paicovitch) attended
agriculture school and
helped his father farm until
he joined with others in
founding Kibutz Ginossar
overlooking the Sea of
Galilee, where he remained
a member until his death.
As a young man Allon

areas of the West Bank to
Jordan while retaining
paramilitary settlements
on the Jordan River.
In 1968, he became the
first Cabinet minister to
move his official residence
into the old city of
Jerusalem.
Levi Eskhol named Allon
deputy premier in 1968 and
he also moved him from
labor to the education
ministry. He held these
posts under Premier Gi -
Mein
When Rabin, who had
served under Allon in the
Palmach, became premier,
Allon became foreign
minister, a post he held
until Labor was ousted by
the Likud. government.
Since 1978, in addition
to being one of Labor's
chief opposition spokes-
men in the Knesset, he
was also chairman of the
World Labor Zionist
movement.
The day before his death,
world statesmen were
entertained at Kibutz
Ginossar by Mr. Allon, the
last being Gen. Kamal Has-
san Ali, Egyptian Defense
Minister. Upon hearing the
news of Mr. Allon's death,
Gen. Ali expressed shock
and sorrow and phoned his
condolences to Mrs. Allon.

joined the Palmach and was
a member of the special
squad organized by Orde
Wingate. By 1948, he had
risen from private to gen-
eral and commander of the
Palmach. Allon withdrew
temporarily from the Pal-
mach when the Jewish
Agency adopted the policy
of hunting down the Irgun.
He returned to head it dur-
ing the War of Indepen-
dence..
He fought on all fronts
and was the first Israeli
commander to push into
the Sinai after Egyptian
forces going , as far as the
outskirts of El Arish be-
fore Premier David
Ben-Gurion ordered him
back under pressure
from the United States.
One of his prisoners,
whom he personally in-

terrogated, was a young
officer named Gamel
Abdel Nasser, who later
became president of
Egypt. Later Allon was
relieved of the southern
command while on an of-
ficial visit to France.
He was replaced 'by
Moshe Dayan, which prob-
ably began the rivalry be-
tween the two generals who
for most of Israel's Labor
Party rule were considered
the two government mem-
bers who could talk to the
Arabs.
In 1950, Allon went to Ox-
ford to study philosophy and
history and worked to-
gether with the noted mili-
tary historian B.H. Liddel
Hart. In 1952, he returned
and was appointed secre-
tary general of Achdut
Haavodah of which he con-
tinued to be a leader
throughout his life.
In 1961, he became minis-
ter of labor after being re-
called from England where
he was taking courses in
Near East studies.
After the 1967 war,
Allon was the first
Cabinet member to pro-
pose a settlement with
Jordan. His plan, which
became known as the
Allon Plan and for which
he is best known outside
Israel, proposed restor-

tripartite talks,15/etween Is-
rael, Egypt and the U.S. on
Palestinian autonomy.
Van der Klaauw was
about to leave for Baghdad
when he was informed by
the Iraqi ambassador that
his visit had been "post-
poned indefinitely." The
Iraqis said they want fur-
ther information on Hol-
land's present position on
the Middle East conflict be-
fore the visit can take place.
Van der Klaauw's visit, at
the invitation of the Iraqi
foreign minister, was in-
tended to strengthen eco-
nomic relations between
Holland and Iraq. He also
hoped to further normalize
relations between Holland
and other Arab countries
which reached an all-time
low after the Yom Kippur
War.
In 1975, Max van der
Stoel, who was fOreign
minister in the previous
Labor government, vis-
ited Egypt and Tunisia.
Van der Klaauw has al-
ready visited Syria, Jor-
dan and Morocco.
Holland is providing de-
velopment aid to Iraq,
mainly in the fields of irri-
gation, cattle breeding, ag-
riculture and transport.
Van der Klaauw told the
Iraqis that Holland simply
complied with a U.S. re-
quest to host the meetings.
Meanwhile, little pro-

gress on the autonomy was
reported from the week-
long talks. The meetings
were picketed by pro-
Palestinian groups and a
major, pro-Palestinian pub-
lic forum was held in
Amsterdam, sponsored by
the Netherlands Palestine
Committee. It was ad-
dressed by several members
of the Dutch Parliament.
A similar forum spon-
sored by a pro-Israel group,
which included speakers
who favored Israel as well
as pro-Palestinians, re-
ceived much less coverage
in the Dutch press.
