Max Fisher Believes Ford Is Best GOP Vote-Getter
GREENE BROS.
(Continued from Page 2)
"weakened," he says. In the
1972 campaign, for in-
stance, he raised $8 million
for Richard Nixon from
among the Jewish commu-
nity. That kind of figure is
now a thing of the past.
But fund-raising ability,
despite the ceilings set by
the new law, is still at a
premium. At a recent
dinner for 200 people that
he organized in Chicago
with former Secretary of
State Henry Kissinger as
guest speaker, $200,000
was pledged for Republican
Party coffers. Such efforts
are certainly not to be
sneezed at.
Fisher's
prowess,
moreover, is not only in the
field of fund-raising, but
also in the no less vital area
of vote-getting. His
presence at campaign head-
quarters, exercising his soft
but persuasive voice in
thousands of telephone con-
versations, is an asset that
any Republican candidate
will want to have.

NEW YORK (JTA) — An
expert on Jewish demog-
raphy has asserted that "the
paramount issue" in Jewish
life at the present time "is
the issue of Jewish popula-
tion.
All other issues fade into
insignificance" compared
with "the low Jewish birth-
rate" and "a high level of in-
termarriage and assimila-
tion."
That warning by Dr. Ste-
ven Cohen appears in a new
reference work, "Jewish
Population: Renaissance or
Oblivion?" Dr. Cohen is
former chairman of the
Task Force on Jewish Popu-
lation of the Commission on
Synagogue Relations of the
Federation of Jewish
Philanthropies.
Rabbi Gilbert Rosenthal,
commission chairman, de-
clared in his introduction to
the new book that, "for the
Jewish people, the issue of
the population bomb simply
does not exist." He said it
would be more accurate "to
describe our situation as a
population bust" which is
"wreaking havoc on Jewish
population."
says Fisher, the Republi-
can aspirants are "all
pretty much the same._
"Ford was probably one of
the best friends Israel ever
had. It was he and Kissinger
who built the groundwork
for the peace treaty with
Egypt. Kissinger was so
much more sophisticated
than the present adminis-
tration. Carter and (Na-
tional security adviser
Zbigniew) Brezinski want
to solve the whole world all
at once. When we were still
dealing with Egypt, I felt
Carter was already talking
about Jerusalem. Kissinger
knew you can't force these
things; it takes time for a
peace process to evolve."
Ford and Kissinger were
"very close," Fisher recalls.
And it is entirely possible,
therefore, that if Ford does
decide to run — and wins —
Kissinger would be in his
administration again. He
himself has maintained his
friendship with both men
since the Republican defeat.
On the other side, Fisher
says he fears Sen. Edward
Kennedy more than Carter.
"Kennedy would be harder
to beat," is his assessment.
Whoever runs and
whoever wins — the
"gut issue," it seems
