Passion plays focusing on
the crucifixion of Jesus are
emotionally potent dramas.
Too often these plays, in-
stead of arousing repen-
tance in Christians, have
instilled hatred and con-
tempt for Jews and
Judaism. The Oberammer-
gau Passion Play, per-
formed every 10 years in
Bavaria, West Germany, is
the most famous — or in-
famous — of these dramas,
so anti-Semitic in its impact
that it was praised by Hit-
ler.

Criticism
Oberammergau drama by
Jewish and Christian
scholars have led to many
changes, but a comprehen-
sive analysis of the text for
the 1980 production, pre-
paried by Judish Banki of
the American • Jewish
Committee, concludes that
the play still maligns
Jewish law, makes villains
of the Jewish. people, and re-
flects an older tradition of
hostility to Judaism which
has since been repudiated
by Christian churches.
More than 500,000
people are expected to
view the Oberammergau
Pasion Play in 1980,
many of them Americans.
Trips to Oberammergau
are being offered by uni-
versity alumni associa-
tions, including those of
Michigan, Colgate, Wis-
consin and Pennsyl-
vania, and by profes-
sional associations as
well as religious organ-
izations.

Focus of Official's
American Visit

TEL AVIV (JTA) —
Joseph Ma'ayan, director
general of the Defense
Ministry, is in Washington
to discuss with American of-
ficials the next generation
of Israel-made combat air-
craft to replace the Kfir jet
interceptor.
The U.S. is involved
mainly because the new
plane, like the Kfir, will be
equipped with an
American-made engine.
Israel, therefore, will re-
quire American permission
to market the plane abroad.
If this is denied, the unit
cost of producing the air-
craft will be much higher
than otherwise.
Israel also will try to ob-
tain permission to produce
many of the American-
made engine components at
home on a license arrange-
ment.
