because Lima was selected
as the seat of Spanish pOwer
The first Jews to arrive in
Peru in modern days settled
in the middle of the 19th
Century after the 1848
revolution in Germany.
By 1870 they had estab-
lished the Sociedad de Be-
neficencia Israelita, which
exists to this day. They ac-
quired land for a cemetery
which is Still being used.
,However, because of a low
birth rate and intermar-
riage, these original settlers
have disappeared.
The organization was
kept alive however by a
new wave of German
immigrants. Towards the
end of the 19th Century a
few Sephardi families

from North Africa estab-
lished a community in
Iquitos where a rubber
boom attracted them. Be-
cause of adverse living
and economic conditions
many left and the rest in-
termarried.
Before World War I,
Sephardi Jews came from
Turkey and Syria. Between
the two wars Jews from
Eastern Europe, particu-
larly Romanian and Polish
Jews, immigrated to Lima.
They started as peddlers
and later branched out into
other parts of the country
and established com-
munities in provincial capi-
tals; but, as before, these
communities died out and
there was a return to Lima.
Between 1933 and 1943 a
