DUBLIN (JTA) — The
Irish Republic has given a
conciliatory reply to a stiff
Israeli protest over pro-
Palestine Liberation
Organization statements by
the Irish Foreign Minister.
However, according to Is-

mains that there has been a

icy in favor of a Palestinian
state and the role of the
PLO.
Exchanges between the
two countries were sparked
off when Foreign Minister
Brian Lenihan, on a visit to
Bahrein, signed a joint
statement backing an inde-
pendent Palestinian state,
and acknowledging the
PLO's claim to represent
the Palestinian people. It
also spoke of the need for
total Israeli withdrawal
from the occupied ter-
ritories, including
Jerusalem.
Israel was especially
incensed by Lenihan's
description of PLO chief
Yasir Arafat as "a most
sensible element." His
further remarks
amounted to a virtual in-
vitation to Arafat to visit
Dublin, which would
thus be the first country
of the European Eco-
nomic Community (EEC)
to offer him hospitality.
The controversy marks
the worst point in Irish-
Israeli relations since dip-
lomatic ties were set up
about five years ago. To Is-
rael's disappointment, Ire-
land refused to exchange
embassies with her, and
contacts are maintained
through non-resident am-
bassadors — by Israel's
Ambassador in Britain and
Ireland's envoy in Switzer-
land.
When it lodged its stiff
protest to Ireland last week,
Israel broke with precedent
and gave it to the Irish Em-
bassy in London, rather
than sending it directly to
the Foreign Ministry in
Dublin. Although Israeli
diplomats say that it di so to
ensure speed of delivery, it
could also have been inter-
preted as a sign of Israel's
anger.

ambassador in Dublin, Is-
rael could not have made
the usual gesture of dis-
pleasure by recalling him
for consultations.
Since then, the Israelis
have followed up their
diplomatic message by
sending their London
press counsellor, Yehuda
Millo, to Dublin to put the
Israeli case to politicians
and the press. He pointed
out tartly that the lack of

an Israeli embassy here
contrasts with the open-
ing of one in Cairo.
Among the Irish public,
Lenihan's remarks have al-
ready been greeted un-
favorably, partly because it
was not prepared for them,
and also because of the
widespread assumption
here that the PLO is linked
with the Irish Republican
Army terrorist organiza-
tion.

Jewish Film and Broadcast
Archive Planned by Museum

NEW YORK (JTA) —
The Charles H. Revson
Foundation and the Jewish
Museum, which is under the
auspices of the Jewish
Theological Seminary of
America, have jointly an-
nounced the creation of the
National Jewish Archives
of Film_ and Broadcasting.
A grant of $550,000 over
three years from the Revson
Foundation will launch the
project as part of the
Museum in Manhattan.
Creation of the archives
follows a year-long study by
the Revson Foundation and
its consultants who
explored the idea with
broadcasting executives,
media experts and
educators. A report on this
study lists more than 700
films and television pro-
grams identified in the pre-
liminary search. The televi-
sion programs include
dramas, interviews, news

JNF Working
on Fifty Sites

JERUSALEM (JTA)
The Jewish National -Fund
is currently engaged in land
reclamation work at more
than 50 sites all over Israel,
JNF chairman Moshe Riv-
lin reported.
In an address last week at
Yahel, the Reform move-
ment's kibutz in the Arava
region, he noted that land is
being leveled for the first of
four new settlements that
will constitute the "Pithat
Shalom" bloc near the Gaza
Strip.
Giant earth-moving
machines have to remove
some 1.5 million cubic
meters of soil to prepare
the land for each of the
settlements. The heavy
equipment is at work
"day and night," he said.
He also noted that the
JNF has planted some,
70,000 trees in the Arava
district in the last three
years, extending from Noat
Hakikar to the edge of the
Dead Sea and as far south as
Kibutz Eilot near the town
of Eilat.

Syria Jewry Day

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Governor Hugh Carey of
New York designated last
Saturday as the "Sabbath of
Remembrance in Solidarity
with Syrian Jewry Day."
Efforts on behalf of the be-
leaguered Syrian Jewish
community "should be sup-
ported by all New Yorkers,"
he said.

and documentaries.
Agreements in princi-
ple have been reached
with the three commer-
cial networks — ABC,
CBS and NBC — and the,
Public Broadcasting
Service to obtain copies
of the selected programs,
with details to be worked
out in the next few-
months. A core filn-i col-
lection will be drawn
from some 1000 feature
films of Jewish interest
produced in the United
States and abroad since
the turn of the century,
and research is under
way to identify relevant
radio programs.
According to the Revson
Foundation report, the Arc-
hives is being established
"to make sure that this un-
paralleled primary source
on the Jewish experience is
not lost and that it is acces-
sible to the widest possible
audience." The Revson
Foundation grant supports
the initial development and
operation of the Archives,
which is scheduled to open
by the end of 1980.

Opposition politicians
pressed their disquiet at a
debate in the Dail (Parlia-
ment) last week.
Lenihan's remarks_ were
also questioned by the Irish
Times, Dublin's leading
daily, not known for its
sympathies for Israel.
The strongest anti-PLO
statement was made on
local television by Ire-
land's newly appointed
chief rabbi, who was
brought up in England
but studied in a yeshiva
in Israel, where he volun-
teered for army duty dur-
ing the war of attrition in
the mid 1970s.
Ireland has only 3,000
Jews, but they are proud of
their links with Israel.
