Bar-Ilan Marks 25th Anniversary
Special to
The Jewish News
RAMAT GAN, Israel —
The start of celebrations
marking the 25th' anniver-
sary of Bar-Ilan University
included commencement
exercises at which honorary
degrees were awarded to
four notable personalities
and recognition was given
to Phillip, Frieda and Max
Stollman of Detroit for their
pioneering efforts in the es-
tablishment of the univer-
sity.
Phillip Stollman, chair-
man of the board of trustees,
recalled how the vision of
Prof. Pinches Churgin and
others was turned into a
reality through the estab-
lishment and development
of Bar-Ilan.
When Phillip Stollman
agreed to take a walk in At-
lantic City in 1952, he had
no idea that he would help
establish a university.
He was utterly shocked
when his companion, the
late Prof. Pinhas Churgin
— then American Miz-
rachi president — started
to talk about founding a
religiously-oriented uni-
versity in Israel.
"This man's a dreamer, I
thought ... and I told him
that as a businessman, I
considered the whole ven-
ture virtually impossible,"
recalls Stollman.
"But Churgin, a dedi-
cated and determined
educator, argued that reli-
gious Zionism was dead if
we didn't do something
about maintaining our
Jewish heritage in Israel.
By the evening's end, he
broke my resistance, and I
agreed to help," Stollman
said.
Now permanent chair-
man of Bar-Ilan, Stollman
held the first meeting in aid
