Queens Center Aids Russian Jews With Acculturation

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Rep. Elizabeth Holtzman
and 17 members of the
President's Select Commis-
sion on Immigration and
Refugee Policy observed di-
rectly some of the problems
facing Jewish refugees from
the Soviet Union and the
help given them by Jewish
aid agencies.
They visited the Service
Center for Russian Immig-
rants, operated as a satellite
program of the Central
Queens YM and YWHA, a
member agency of the Fed-
eration of Jewish Philan-
thropies, which arranged
the center in an apartment
in Rego Park.
The Queens drop-in cen-
ter is part of a network of
neighborhood facilities the
federation has set up to
acclimatize the ever-
growing numbers of Rus-
sian Jews settling in New

York City.
The network covers
major neighborhoods
and is funded in part by a
federal grant for reset-
tlement and integration
of refugees, obtained
through the efforts of the
Council of Jewish Feder-
ations.
The $2.2 million grant re-
ceived by the federation in
this program is matched by
funds from Jewish sources
to make a total of $4.4 mil-
lion available for the feder-
ation's acculturation activi-
ties.
Commission members
also talked to volunteers
and professionals at the
Rego Park center who spel-
led out some of the help they
provide to newcomers by re-
ferrals to housing, social ac-
tivities, job opportunities,
tutoring, Jewish education,
escort services, accultura-
