THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Washington's Jewish Link

By DAVID SCHWARTZ
(Copyright 1980, JTA, Inc.)

February is a short month
but it makes up for it by
having the holidays of the
two most famous Americans
— George Washington and
Abraham Lincoln.
David Ben-Gurion was an
admirer of Washington, but
Israel doesn't observe any
Ben-Gurion birthday.
While physically, Washing-
ton and Ben-Gurion were
dissimilar, especially in
height, they were much
alike in their moral qual-
ities and in their devotion to
the cause of the indepen-
dence of their countries.
Both were not too much at
talking, but they left no void
in action.
The war for American in-
dependence was a very long
one — over seven years. The
states were often negligent
in supplying the funds
necessary for carrying on
the war.

In this financial de-
partment, the Jew, Haym
Salomon must have been
a great pillar of strength
to Washington. Salomon
sold more American war
bonds abroad than any-
one else. It is Salomon's
name that occurs most

Justification Plan

JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
The government of
Menahem Begin is repor-
tedly planning to publicize a
post-1967 war statement by
Prime Minister Levi Eshkol
and World Jewish Congress
President Nahum
Goldmann to justify Jewish
settlements on the West
Bank.
In their 1967 statement,
Eshkol and Goldmann re-
portedly said that all the
land of Israel was the right-
ful inheritance of the state
of Israel.

AJC Fighting
Abortion Law

CHICAGO — Charging
that a 1979 amendment to
the Illinois Abortion Act
"eliminates the fundamen-
tal constitutional right of Il-
linois women to obtain an
abortion," the American
Jewish Congress has filed a
friend-of-the-court brief
with the U.S. Court of Ap-
peals supporting a lawsuit
brought by four physicians
and two health clinics who
say the statute prevents
them from engaging in pro-
per medical practices.

Technion Society
Elects Chicagoan

NEW YORK — Theodore
H. Krengel, Chicago indus-
trialist and community
leader, has been elected
president of the American
Technion Society.
Also elected were Jacob
W. Ullmann of New York
City as chairman of the
board of directors and
Henry Taub of Tenafly,
N.J., associate chairman.
Sen. Jacob K. Javits was
re-elected honorary chair-
, man.

frequently in the diary of
Robert Morris who had
general charge of the
ecolidinic side of the war.

Salomon also was prob-
ably of assistance in other
directions. It will be re-
called that the British hired
an army of German Hessian
soldiers to do the fighting
for them. Salomon could
speak German and under-
stood the German mental-
ity. The late Stanwood S.
Menken, president in his
day 6f the American De-
fense Society, once told me
that it was Salomon who
suggested to Washington
the idea of attacking the
Trenton Hessian post on
Christmas Day.
Salomon believed they
would be under the influ-
ence of alcohol on that day,
and so it proved to be. The
Hessians were taken with
almost no struggle. It was
the first great victory for
Washington.

As the first President of
the United States, Wash-
ington made a tour of the
country, visiting, am-ag
other towns, Newport,
R.I., where he was re-
ceived in the synagogue.
A Jew there presented
him with an unusual gift
— a bottle of water! An
unusual type of water —
desalinated sea water!
The Newport Jew had
been working on the
problem of desalination,
years in advance of Is-
rael's current efforts.

Legend has it that Wash-
ington attended the wed-
ding of the father of Mor
decai Manuel Noah, the
eminent journalist.

Russian Children
Enter Yeshivot

NEW YORK (JTA) — A
new agency, Be'er Hagolah,
has announced plans to reg-
ister more Russian Jewish
children in Brooklyn
yeshivot in a cooperative
program in which the chil-
dren, while studying at the
yeshivot-are students of the
agency, a spokesman,
Manny Behar said. Behar is
administrator of the pro-
gram.
The agency began opera-
tions last September as the
Committee for the Educa-
tion of Russian Youth but
the name has since been
changed to the Committee
for the Education of Russian
Immigrants (CERI).
Morton Berger, CERI
president, said that with the
additional enrollment in
the four Brooklyn yeshivot,
CERI would be sponsoring
some 500 Russian Jewish
children who otherwise
"would have been lost to
Klal Israel."

Mt. Sinai Burial

CAIRO (ZINS) — During
the ceremonies at St.
Catherine's monastery in
Sinai, which transferred
control of a portion of the
Sinai back to Egypt,
President Anwar Sadat told
a correspondent that he had
placed in his will the re-
quest that he be buried on
Mt. Sinai.

Airfields Stay on Schedule

TEL AVIV (JTA) — The

two American-financed air-
fields now building in the
Negev to replace those Is-
rael will give up in Sinai,
will be completed and oper-
ational by April, 1982.
Heavy equipment is evident
all over the area and the
outlines of the airstrips are
already visible.

Brig. Gen. Paul Hartung
of the U.S. Army Engineers
Corps., who is in charge of
construction of the two air-
fields and Col. Dick Curl,
chief engineer for the\Ovda
airfield, told military corre-
