"A superior staff," well-
planned fire drills, "fantas-
tic" residents and the un-
stinting help of volunteers
and agencies — all were
credited with preventing
what could have been a
major problem at Jewish
Federation Apartments on
Jan. 29.
A fire, which began in a
resident's apartment on the
eighth floor of the original
JFA building, was con-

Mrs. Naimark also had
high praise for volunteers
Mrs. B. Barenholtz, Mrs.
Morris Bovitz and Mrs.
Erwin Simon and resident
Max Shinebroom for spend-
ing the day manning phones
and comforting residents
and concerned relatives.
Jack A. Robinson,
president of Jewish Federa-
tion Apartments, said the
response of other agencies
was swift. Personnel from
the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion arrived to assist even
while firemen were on the
scene.
The Jewish Community
Center invited the residents
for lunch. The Oak Park
Community Center sent
over a bus so the JFA resi-
dents could spend the day
there.
The Jewish Home for
Aged offered its facilities
for any whose apart-
ments were affected by
smoke and water seepage
from the fire site. Later,
the Jewish Family Serv-
ice sent over several
homemakers to help the
residents put their

Staff members Steve
Rymal and Will Linder
ran through the building,
checking on residents
and reassuring them.
Mrs. Naimark described
their role as "superior."
Both later were treated
for smoke inhalation.
Several building occup-
ants also were briefly
hospitalized.

to the poured concrete con-

doors of each apartment.
According to Helen
Naimark, JFA executive di-
rector, the residents reacted
calmly. Thanks to a recent
fire drill, held floor by floor,
they remembered that the
safest place to be was in
their own apartments,
keeping doors closed.
