LISTENING
POST

LAWRENCE SHANK-
MAN, graduate of Central
High, January 1940, will be
Bar Mitzva along with his
son, Michael (age 32) and
his grandson, Charles, to-
morrow in Palm Beach, Fla.
. . . Lawrence's wife Betty
(Kushner) also attended
Central.
Lawrence's religious edu-
cation was stopped when his
father William was killed in
an automobile accident
near Ypsilanti in 1930 .. .
Couple of years later, to
help support his mother and
three sisters, 10-year-old
Lawrence worked as a
newspaper boy on Dexter
and Elmhurst, swept floors
at Crow's Dairy (later Eagle
Dairy), Cunningham Drug
Store and Star Bakery, in
addition to attending early
intermediate school at Dur-
fee.
Lawrence's son Michael,
was in the midst of plans for
his Bar Mitzva in Ohio
when the family suddenly
moved to Florida.
Last year, Lawrence's
daughter-in-law, Janie,
asked her husband
Michael and father-in-
law Lawrence to join
their son Charles at the
Torah.
The' Shankman family
will be coming from many
parts of the country and
Canada . . . Lawrence's
mother, Dorothy, lives at
the Charter House in South-
field . . . Also attending will
be his sisters, Frances
Shepherd and husband
(David) of Oak Park; Lucille
Simon (and hubby Harold)
of West Bloomfield; and
Ruthe Gutow of Dallas,
Texas.
Lawrence is owner and
operator of the Pullman
Furniture Stores in West
Palm Beach, North Palm
Beach and Deiray.
STATE REP. JOE
FORBES has gotten out his
"brain book" to come up
with stories for this Monday
night . . . He'll emcee the
dinner honoring five new
federal judges, including
Avern Cohn.
It'll be at Adat Shalom
Synagogue . . . presented by
Bnai Brith Barristers .. .
cocktails at 6 and dinner at
7 . . . Honorary chairmen
are U.S. Senator Donald
Riegle and U.S. Senator
Carl Levin . . . Co-chairmen
are Alan Ackerman and
Stephen C. Cooper.
Those who know Joe can
expect a few good stories . . .
He's one of the best around
. . . and as Jimmy Durante
used to say, "Has a million
of 'em."
CONGRATS ... to Mar-
ion and Jay Grant on 37th
anniversary . . . If you can't
find them at home, reason
could be that they're roller
skating, playing racquet-
ball or bowling.
MORE REASON for
Terry and barrister Leo
Papp to be proud of their son

,

Andrew . . . He recently
made the Dean's List at
University of Rochester in
New York, completing his
first semester as a
freshman.
Andy is the same young
gent who while going to
Harrison High in Far-
mington Hills won the Met-
ropolitan Science Fair
grand prize in two success-
ive years ... resulting in his
being sent to the Interna-
tional Science Fairs in 1978
and 1979, where he also won
grand honors.
26th
ANNUAL
President's Dinner - Dance
by Crescent Shrine Club
will be Feb. 24 . . . at Adat
Shalom Synagogue . . .
black tie optional.
Crescent this year will
sponsor 1,457 children to
the 1980 Shrine Circus.
Tickets and volunteer
workers are again very
much needed.
Also, if you are a Crescent
Shriner, your help at the
circus on the day of March
27 will be very much ap-
preciated . . . Believe me,
you'll never sleep better
than the evening after help-
ing these unfortunate kid-
dies enjoy the Shrine Circus
. . . Give me a call at the
office or home.
THE NAME HAS noth-
ing to do with clothes . . .
which surprises some
people when they hear
about Detroit Laundry
Supply Co. on Coolidge in
Oak Park . . . But there was
an affiliation of years back
which owner Marian Raimi
has revered . . . and so re-
tention of the name . . . She
was in the cleaning busi-
ness with late husband Max
. . . and when he passed on,
Marian kept the name for
the business of today that is
now celebrating its 25th
anniversary . . . selling
quilts, bedspreads, pillows,
tablecloths, blankets, etc. in
a well-received discount op-
eration . . . Honoring 25
years, Detroit Laundry Co.
and its smiling ways of
doing business is now even
adding another 10 percent
off the discounted prices.
CONGRATS ... to
former Detroiters Dorothy
and Harry Serwin, now liv-
ing in Carlsbad, Calif. . . .
on their 46th wedding an-
niversary.
DINNER - DANCE BY
Knights of Pythias, Detroit
No. 55, celebrating its in-
stallation of officers, will be
March 23 at the Furniture
Club.
