WHAT'S IN A name? ...
It takes a special sort of a
man to go through life with
the "Susie" moniker, but
"Susie" Schecter has done it
for almost 75 years ...
There are many people who
don't know his real name is
Myron ... It's even Susie in
the telephone book.
When he played basket-
ball at City College of De-
troit in the mid-1920s, he
played as Susie Schecter.
His wife calls him that. His
six grandchildren have
shortened it to "Papa Sue."
City College was the
forerunner of Wayne State
University, which will in-
duct Susie into its Sports
Hall of Fame in a luncheon
ceremony set for Feb. 9 .. .
Tickets can be gotten from
his son Allan, 851-4511.
Susie was with the De-
troit Times for almost 30
years, until it folded in
1960 ... He jumped into
the real estate business
as a broker-investor-
appraiser.
Once he was testifying to
the value of a parcel of prop-
erty in Wayne County Pro-
bate Court when Judge Er-
nest Boehm took over the
questioning: "Do you know
what perjury is?" ... Schec-
ter: "Yes." ... Boehm: "Are
you also known as 'Susie'?"
. Shechter: "Yes." Boehm:
"HOw did you get the
name?" ... Schecter: "I
don't know, judge."

Danny Raskin's

IT WAS BEAUTIFUL
outside . . . The sun was
shining, people couldn't be-
lieve winter was here .
Then it happened, and
somebody had to be blamed.
Who else but Sid Hudson,
arriving for his regular visit
from Las Vegas where. the
only time they see anything
that looks like snow is when
a cocktail waitress spills an
iced frappe on the crap ta-
ble.
But Sid didn't mind the
blame ... Why not him in-
stead of somebody else? ...
This, really, is Sid Hudson
. also working for
humanitarian ideals and
the furtherance of health
research toward finding an-
swers in the many still-dark
regions of health's path .. .
It's because of people like
Sid that daylight is begin-
ning to show through on
many heretofore unknowns
at the City of Hope Research
Medical Center in Duarte,
Calif.
His recent visit in-
cluded plans for another
money-maker here this
summer to fill up more
coffers at his Sid
"Hudosh" Hudson
Foundation at the City of
Hope.
What if he did bring the,
snow . . . Who the heck cares
.. as long as Sid continues
helping people.
On another note about
Sid Hudson ... He spent
$5,000 for a bust of Joe Jouis
to be placed in the Joe
Louis Arena here as per
personal conversation with
Detroit Mayor Coleman
Young ... It is still sitting
on the shelf at Al Kay
Jewelers on Southfield ..
after being shipped here
from Las Vegas . .. Maybe
Young hasn't gotten over
the shock that somebody
kept their word about doing
something for the city.
Whatever the reason, it
sure is no tribute to the
greatest boxing champion of
all time to be sitting on Al
Kay's counter instead of in
the arena named after him
. and very inexcusable to
accept Sid's generous offer
. and then go back on a
word.
ED WOLFE hadn't been
back to Detroit in two years
. He now lives in Miami
Beach, Fla. ... But he's al-
ready forgotten about our
weather ... Coming here
recently from 70 degree
weather, the first thing he
asked was, "Where's the
nearest tennis court?"
Eddie was here to attend
recent Bar Mitzva of grand
nephew • Mark Allan
Eliades, son of Sue Eliades,
at Cong. Beth Abraham
Hillel Moses ... Next day,
at Furniture Club afternoon
lunch reception, Ed told
Mark's grandparents, Ray
and Lil Dunn, that he
wouldn't have played tennis
anyway ... "I left my lucky
racquet home."
