Masada Epic RCreatd for Television
From Israel Digest
JERUSALEM — Deep in
the Judean Desert, two
mountains away from
Masada, Herod's famous
desert fortress, ABC Televi-
sion and Universal Studios
have recreated the life and
times of the famous moun-
taintop as it must have
looked more than 1,900
years ago. The sets were
constructed with amazing
attention to detail.
The "Hollywood Masada"
and the Roman siege camp
were constructed after
months of research and con-
sultation with Deputy Pre-
mier Yigael Yadin, ex-
cavator and restorer of the
site.
Both the zealot moun-
taintop village and Roman
camp look surprisingly real.
Both sets were made from
local materials, including
wood and styrofoam, by a
U.S. construction crew and
local contractors.

drovich will perform in con-

The script is based on Er-

eventual mass suicide.
The cast includes Peter

Kiryat Arba Settlement
Expanded, Housing Added
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Work began last week,
under the protection of Is-
raeli army guards, to ex-
pand the Jewish settlement
of Kiryat Arba near Heb-
ron. The work, that of build-
ing additional housing, con-
tinued undisturbed despite
a protest demonstration by
a group of Arabs claiming
ownership of the land
known as Harsina Hill.
At the same time, it was
learned that work has been
completed on the recon-
struction of the Hadassah
building in Hebron — which
still houses a group of Gush

Anatoly's Sabbath
The Jewish Community
Council of Metropolitan De-
troit has reminded area
congregations of Anatoly
Shcharansky's 32nd birth-
day on Sunday. In a letter to
all community rabbis,
Committee on Interna-
tional Concerns Chairman
Prof. Richard Strichartz
urged the Detroit Jewish
community to "not forget
Shcharansky, and the
USSR's continuing abuse of
his human rights."
Strichartz asked the
community to demonstrate
its solidarity with
Shcharansky by making
appropriate mention of him
on the Sabbath through
sermons, discussions or
other programming, or to
write letters of concern over
Shcharansky's continuing
imprisonment and reported
failing health to Ambas-
sador Anatoly Dobrynin.
