LET'S SPEND THE NEW YEAR
IN A VERY "HAIMMISH" ATMOSPHERE

Psychologist: Don't Shield
UAe
Children From Death, Dying

NEW YORK (JTA) — An
authority on death and
dying has warned that,
since children as young as
two years of age "are al-
ready wrestling with the
idea of death," it is a mistake
for adults to protect them
"by shielding them from the
realities of death" an act
which "only hinders their
emotional growth."
That view was expressed
by Dr. Herman Feifel, chief
psychologist of the Veterans
Administration hosptial in
Los Angeles, at Yeshiva
University's Sixth Annual
Interdisciplinary Edua-
tional Conference of Life-
Threatening Illnesses, Be-
reavement and Grief.
He said efforts by parents
to shield their children from
the fact of death "mirrors
more the adults' and par-
ents' anxieties and ap-
prehensions about death
than the child's actual abil-
ity to handle the impact of
death.

He contended that
children are capable of
"withstanding the stress
brought on by their
limited understanding of
death" and that recogni-
tion by children "of the
authenticity of death
helps them make better
sense of the world."

Discussing the Judaic ap-
proach to death and loss, Dr.
Feifel said that the Judaic
tradition "stresses the good
society on earth." He de-
clared that, by and large,
"Judaism's approach to
death and loss tends to be
rather consonant with the
current mental-hygienic
outlook."
He said this approach
"recognizes the need for
psychosocial support and
human witness for the
dying person." He stressed
that "when a person is dy-
ing," he should not be left
alone.
The Judaic approach, he
added, "tends to be factual
concerning death and does
not attempt to falsify its
reality" and "its respect
toward and sanctification of
the dead body serves to
reassure family members
and communal survivors."
Finally, he said, that ap-
proach "appreciates the
human need for mourning
and expressing grief."

from infancy on.

"Its pertinence is not only
for those in the helping pro-
fessions who deal with dy-
ing, death and bereave-
ment, but for all of us — in
home, school and in our
general cultural instruc-
tion."
He proposed 'reconstruc-
tion of training curricula in
medical, nursing, social
work and seminary schools"
and "complementary
dialogue between profes-
sionals and informed gen-
eral community." He said
that, ultimately, "quality
care for the dying will rest
upon continuing public
awareness and support."
