Lea Sukenich, a national
U.S. karate champion, has
been competing nationally
and internationally now for
three years and has won her
first championship at the
intermediate level.
After her stay in the in-
termediate division she
went into the advanced
level of karate and she says,
"It was really over my head.
My opponents were much
more advanced than I was. I
am beginning to place now
in local and state cham-
pionships in advanced
competition and, of course, I
hope ultimately I'll get to
the nationals in this level."
When asked whether she
ran into anti-Semitism
since she's one of the few
Jewish women at that level
of karate competition, Ms.

situation regarding our

our national Geneva
Convention relief society,
the Magen David Adorn
society. The society was
established as far back as
1930 and in our War of
Independence in 1948 the
International Committee
of the Red Cross and the
various parties con-
cerned accepted a plan
for humanitarian activi-
ties which embodied full
recognition of our society
and full recognition of
our emblem.
"We see no justification
whatsoever for the dis-
crimination against our
society and emblem. This
state of affairs, deliberately
excluding us from full par-
ticipation in the Interna-
tional Red Cross, is a source
of great resentment among

us.

One of the surprising
developments with the
karate classes Ms.
Sukenich teaches is that
she is working with many
Hasidic women who
come from very strong
religious backgrounds
and who are used to
being dominated by their
menfolk. Ms. Sukenich
said that the Hasidic
women are taking to the
sport but refuse to par-
ticipate in any competi-
tion because they don't
want to expose their
bodies in any way, shape,
or form, to men spec-
tators.
You know how religious
the Hasidim are," she said.
"I have female Hasidic ka-
rate performers who wear
sheitels (wigs) but they
come onto the gym floor
dressed in pants, which is
quite a change from the tra-
ditional garb a Hasidic wife
wears. As you know, they
wear long sleeved dresses
with the skirt extending
well below the knees. I now
have them running around
in pants and they obviously
don't want to be seen by
men."
