THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Sooner or later, the worst
possible set of circum-
stances is bound to occur.

Danny Raskin's

LISTENING
POST

AN EXAMPLE of how
bad the Detroit Lions foot-
ball team is this year comes
with the stark revelation of
the difficulty in giving away
tickets free to their games
. . . Furniture man Phil
Bradley gave me a couple,
plus a Pontiac Silverdome
parking pass . . . I couldn't
go and nobody else wanted
them for what would have
been another wasted Sun-
day afternoon . . . Memory
is still clear when you
couldn't beg, borrow or steal
tickets to their games, and
many fans would just about
give their eye teeth away to
see a game . . . Now Monte's
(Coach Monte Clark's)
Monotonous Menagerie is
unbelievably bad . . . cer-
tainly not worth the gas it
takes to get to the Silver-
dome . . . or even the time
watching them go through
the motions . . .- no matter
how big a fan a person like
myself is . . . of good foot-
ball, that is . . . not the
bungling type by this year's
Detroit Lions.
GET WELL WISHES
. . . to CPA Sam Wilson, re-
cuperating after open heart
surgery at Henry Ford Hos-
pital . . . to Dr. Sam Geren-
dasy, recuperating at home.
IVIADE A BIG boo boo on
item about nephew Brian
Gussin's recent Bar Mitzva
. . . It's Great-Grandmother
Minnie Raskin . . . not great
aunt.
ALMOST, A YEAR-
AND-A-HALF away, but
Oak Park High Reunion,
June Class of 1976, to be
held July 19, 1981, at Hyatt
Regency in Dearborn, has
big search on for lots of
grads from about 550 ex cap
'n gowners . . . Call Debbie
Weisberg, 855-1559.
SMALL WORLD
DEPT. . . . Had my ears
cleaned at Henry Ford Hos-
pital on Grand Blvd.. . . and
the delicate handler of ear,
nose and throat instru-
ments was a pleasant sur-
prise . . . Dr. Seth Cohen,
here about eight years from
Philadelphia, and the son of
local cardiac specialist, Dr.
Leonard Cohen, has been
married two months to the
daughter of old friends .. .
Wife Jane, a medical
technologist at Sinai Hospi-
tal, is the daughter of Min-
nie and the late Manny Hil-
lander . . . Also, Seth and
Jane are half-a-block-aWay
neighbors.
DID YOU KNOW .. .
that favorite gal of yours
has a particular flower of
the month? . . . January,
carnation; February, violet;
March, jonquil; April, daisy;
May, lily-of-the-valley;
June, rose; July, larkspur;
August, poppy; September,
aster; October, cosmos; No-
vember, chrysanthemum;
and December, narcissus.
LOOKING BACK ON
Columns Of Yesteryears .. .
DEC. 29,1961 . . "As of a
few days before their big

.1

day, the marriage of Bar-
bara Silverman and Sher-
win Harris was all but
called off . . . She got the
mumps . . . The entire bri-
dal party had been told not
to come to rehearsal, but the
250 invitees couldn't be con-
tacted in time . . . However,
when the doctor said the
wedding could be held, the
rehearsal went on and the
couple were married at
Cong. Beth Aaron, with or-
chestra leader Sam Barnett
announcing to the guests
not to kiss the bride but to
graciously shake her hand
. . . Barbara is the daughter
of Florence and Julius Sil-
verman, and Sherwin the
son of Milton and Estelle
Harris."
JAN. 5, 1962 . . . "Robert
Taub, nine-year-old son of
Mr. and Mrs. David Taub,
went with his fourth grade
class at Vernor School and
teacher Etta Weitzer to see
Santa Claus at the school
. . . When it came his turn,
Robert asked Santa for a
dreidel . . . The white-
bearded gent furrowed his
bushy eyebrows, took a deep
swallow and said, "Next!"
APRIL 13, 1962 . . . The
devotion and service which
Bernard "B.B." Bolton,
grand chancellor of Michi-
gan Knights of Pythias, has
shown to the order wasn't
forgotten by his own Detroit
Lodge 55, whose recent tes-
timonial dinner-dance for
him was another in its way
of giving flowers to the liv-
ing."
MAY 11, 1962 . . . "Defi-
nition . . . by Dental Dr. Abe
Pearlman . . . that an
American city is a place
where by the time you've
finished paying for your
home in the suburbs, the
suburbs have moved 20
miles further out."
AUG. 10, 1962 . . .
"Here's a switch . . . When
New York's Gov. Nelson
Rockefeller spoke in Oak
Park, he caught sight of El-
liot Feldman furiously
doing a caricature of him .. .
He was so impressed by the
likeness, he asked Elliot for
HIS. autograph . . . Elliot is
the 16-year-old son of Anne
and Abe Feldman."
FEB. 7, 1969 . . . "Norm
Feder, council head in
Southfield running for
mayor, likes the one about
the Jewish businessman
who was persuaded to use a
dictaphone on a trial basis,
and if he liked it, he could
buy it . . . The next day the
dictaphone representative
called at his office and asked
him how the machine was
. . . 'Well, I'll tell you,' said
the customer, it ain't so bad
but it talks with an awful
accent.' . . . (Norm won the
mayoral post and went on to
become judge, a post he still
holds in Southfield's 46th
District Court.)

Left to themselves, things
tend to go from bad to worse.
