Writer Defends Dr. Thomas Szasz

Editor, The Jewish News:
As chairman of the
Humanist Forum of the Bir-
mingham Temple, I have
been asked to respond to
several erroneous state-
ments about our temple,
voiced by Dr. Emanuel
Tanay when discussing the
ecture by Dr. Thomas Szasz
on psychiatric practices.
Dr. Tanay states that we
did not let him speak. Actu-
ally, he was invited to par-
ticipate in the question-
and-answer session after

Personal 'Buy Israeli' Plan

Editor, The Jewish News:
I was extremely pleased
and delighted about your
beautiful article in the Nov.
16 issue concerning Farmer
Jack selling Israeli food
products.
I have been buying a few
dollars worth of Israeli-
produced food every week. It
is delicious, good and fairly
priced. Even if it costs a few
pennies more it is well
worth it.
Can you imagine if every
Jewish family would buy a

few dollars worth of Israeli
products every week, it
would amount to millions of
dollars yearly and create
jobs for the new immigrants
in Israel. We could look for-
ward to the day when Israel
would be economically in-
dependent. This is just as
important as political and
military independence.
I sincerely hope that all
your readers who have
not bought Israeli prod-
ucts regularly will do so
immediately and will tell
their families and friends
to do the same.
I also hope the other mar-
kets in Jewish areas will
stock and sell Israeli prod-
ucts.

Syrians Boosted

PARIS (ZINS) — The
Soviet Union has written off
$500 million worth of Sy-
rian debts, according to an
Arab-language paper pub-
lished in France, and sent
new planes and tanks, Scud
and Frog missles and elec-
tronic jamming gear to
Syria.

JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
The Israel Ministry of
Communications says
200,000 Israelis are waiting
to have telephones in-
stalled. The ministry has
the capacity to install only
50,000 telephones each
year.

Memorial Asked

Editor, The Jewish News:
I propose that monu-
, ments in honor and memory
of Bernard Isaacs, the ar-
chitect of the United He-
brew Schools, and the He-
brew teachers, the trail
blazers of our Hebrew
school system, be erected on
the grounds of UHS central
building.
The monuments should
consist of two monoliths —
one dedicated to Bernard
Isaacs, the other to the
teachers. Their names,
engraved on bronze tablets,
should be fastened to the
stones. I would like the
monuments to be erected in
the center of specially con-
structed flower beds.
Such monuments would
add prestige to the United
Hebrew Schools and its
leaders.
I would urge, therefore,
the president and board of
directors of the UHS to act
promptly on this long over-
due project.
