RESTAURANT SHOW
business, like anything
else, can be both good or bad
. . . but very seldom can it be
found in more than one
area.
Lemon Peel on Wood-
ward, south of 15 Mile,
boasts a "one-in-a-million"
chef . . . He's Theodore Mit-
ropoulos, whose lusty
baritone voice has rocked
La Scala Opera in Milan,
Italy II. times.
But this isn't Theodore's
only trait . . . He holds dip-
lomas from Athens Univer-
sity in classic psychology
and,political science . . . is a
doctor of divinity . . . and
talks on WQRS radio every
Sunday at 2 p.m.
"Cooking is my life, not
my job," says Theodore,
whose culinary abilities
are with few equals ...
When Yassoo opened it's
doors on Woodward,
Theodore was head chef
... the reason why it was
so good for three months
... When he left, Yassoo
went down and finally
closed.
Chef Theodore at Lemon
Peel doesn't _stop at Greek
food . . . Among other res-
taurants, he was at Lelli's in
1969 ... and at the Picadilly
of Raleigh House from 1972
to 1974 . . . making mush-
room barley soup, cheese
blintzes, kishke, etc.
Lemon Peel, owned by
John Kales and his father-
in-law Leo Dimitrios, is
very much a family proposi-
tion . . . There's John's wife
Fran as hostess and their
three daughters, 21-year-
old Ellie, 18-year-old Laurie
and 15-year-old Kathy.
It originally had been a
22-stool Biff's hamburger
operation since 1965 . . . and
is now a 145-seater with
booths and tables, plus a
very intimate, comfortable
cocktail lounge . . . Only six

weeks old, Lemon Peel was
three years in the building
by John and family, includ-
ing the stucco walls and
cocktail lounge's brick-by-
brick floor . . . The lounge is
the area where Biffs used to
be . . . After receiving a
liquor license, John and Leo
bought the Carl's Car Wash,
gutted it and made their
Lemon Peel dining room.
The decor is simple and
quite secondary ... food
and service comes first
... Waiter Nick Notsi is
courteous, efficient and
very adept at his trade
Waitresses like Ellie
and Laurie do much to
complement the place ...
as does mother Fran
Kales and there is
Chef Theodore, of whose
cooking too much cannot
be said ... His ability in
making elegant sauces
and combining tasty
spices is splendid .
From Ted's very talented
hands came an excellent
dinner . so capably
served by Nick ...
Saganaki (flaming
cheese), Greek salad, su-
perb stuffed grape leaves
with an uncanny delicious
lemon sauce, lamb meat
balls with a distinct taste
all its own, served on a bed
of expertly-spiced rice, roast
lamb and rice like you've
never tasted before, and
juicy little marinated lamb
chops.
Desserts are made in
Lemon Peel's kitchen .. .
baklava, puddings, etc. . . .
Our delight was the won-
derful Galactobourico, a
tantalizingly yummy deli-
cacy.
Yet with all this, Lemon
Peel is not strictly a Greek
restaurant" ... Who knows
what Ted can cook? .. .
Chinese food? . . . French
food? . . . I sure wouldn't bet
against his preparing either
of these.
He's great, too, on
American cuisine ... like
lobster tails, steaks (even
Japanese Teriyaki
steak), veal, white fish,
etc. ... But Greek culi-
nary expertise is the
thing at Lemon Peel ...
although, then again, its
hamburgers are among
the best around.
Chef Ted is quite the per-
sonality . . . you should get
to know him . . . taste his
food . . . listen to his
philosophizing.
All in all, people are
quickly discovering Lemon
Peel . . . Chef Theodore
loves people so much he
wants them to enjoy life .. .
and that means his food
preparations also.
The prices at Lemon Peel
are most reasonable . . . And
if you don't go there expect-
ing an ultra fancy place,
you'll be glad I told you
about it.
Also, who knows, Chef
Theodore might even come
to your table with an aria
from Rigoletto.
Lemon Peel's kitchen is
open Monday through
Saturday til 1:30 a.m. .. .
