The contributions made
by Jewish immigrants to .
the American music scene
are the subject of an intense
study by Deena and Ber-
nard Rosenberg in "The
Music Makers" (Columbia
University Press).
By utilizing extensive in-
terviews and then editing
themselves out, the Rosen-
bergs have fashioned
"monologues" in which the
interviewees talk of their
yearnings, frustrations and
gratifications as they pur-
sue their musical careers.
Although prominent
musical "celebrities" such
as Copeland, Tilson-
Thomas, and Ormandy re-
ceive their due, the book
concentrates on informing
readers of some of the
lesser-known musical per-
sonalities.
One such example is the
late Frank Hubbard, a
harpsichord maker, who
• RIBS • CHICKEN • SHRIMP • FISH & CHIPS • SUBS
couldn't bear to sell his in-
struments to universities
(traditionally, one of the
largest markets) because of
his aversion to dealing with
administrators.
Miss Rosenberg, a
former Detroiter and a
student in the PhD pro-
gram in 41iusic at City
University of New York,
did not feel uncomforta-
ble in collaborating on
the book with her father,
a professor in the Colum-
bia PhD program in
sociology.
"We get along very well,"
she said. "And my father
happens to be brilliant . . .
I not only have great love for
him, but awe."
Miss Rosenberg is a
musicologist who writes
frequently for the Sunday
New York Times and other
periodicals. She is also
working on a biography of
George and Ira Gershwin.
